Does anyone know why US has only 3 (not 4) singles players competing in Men's and Women's Singles respectively?

https://www.ittf.com/tournament/5298/2021-world-championships/ has the list of players.

I've read that the quota is 3+1+1 for each association, 3 entries plus 1 extra if a player in your association is in top 100 world ranking (and another 1 if top 20). Both Kanak Jha and Lily Zhang are in top 100 so shouldn't it mean US has a quota of 4 players for both men and women?

That is the maximum number of players the US would have been allowed, not the minimum. The US had one man and three women who were ranked high enough to meet the qualification requirements, but the host country gets a minimum of three men and three women.

Thanks. Was just curious that with a max of 4 players quota, there wasn't enough US players to fill them up, considering after all this is the first ever World Championships held on US soil

The US has 3 men on the players list: Kanak Jha, Kai Zhang, and Nikhil Kumar

As kagin tried to explain, that's just not how it works. First players have to qualify individually. If fewer than 3 per gender qualify (as seems to be the case for US men), then the host association can "fill up" to that quota of 3 but not more.

[Of course if Ma Long wants to leave China and play for the US, then that changes everything Wacko Wink ]

Host nation - is guaranteed three (3) singles and four (4) doubles places. If the host nation qualifies fewer than three (3) singles players and two (2) doubles pairs from the Continental or World Ranking Places they will be allocated the difference. In case the host nation qualifies players/pairs at the Continental Stage, the equivalent number of quota places (with a maximum of three (3) singles / two (2) doubles) will be added to the same Continent’s quota places. The host nation is not guaranteed any host quota for the +1+1 players for singles, if eligible based on the relevant regulation, unless naturally qualified.

Yes, it may be really hazardous to travel overseas under the current pandemic situation, anyway. You will catch corona while doing defecation in airport Toilet room outright.
