Hi,

The rescheduled 2021 ITTF-Oceania Championships has been rescheduled for February 23 - 27, 2022, in Kilsyth, Australia, which is a suburb of the city of Melbourne, the location of the 2022 Australian Open Tennis Championships.

This topic is relevant in light of the current news concerning Novak Djokovic's ongoing conflict with the COVID-19 protocols for visitors.

News sources have reported that Djokovic had received an exemption from the tennis authorities and the state for his COVID status.  It is reported that Scott Morrison, the Australian Prime Minister, had approved the exemption, allowing Djokovic entry into the country.

Australians were angered by the decision to grant Djokovic an exemption, which led to a change in Prime Minister Scott Morrison's position.

From the time of the exemption approval until the time Djokovic traveled from Dubai to Australia, the Prime Minister changed his mind and withdrew the exemption.

The Australian participating authorities have stated that the COVID-19 protocols for visitors are based on the science, as was the granting of the exemption.  The withdrawal of the exemption is being represented as based on the science.

Prior to Djokovic's arrival in Australia, three tennis players participating in the Australian Open were granted exemptions for their COVID status.

Djokovic's legal advisors have lodged an appeal of the exemption withdrawal.

Careful consideration should be given to any visitors participating in the 2021 ITTF-Oceania Championships in February, 2022.

Thanks.

I'm not entirely sure that what you've written  is what has happened.

From my reading, it seemed like although the PM would've had a role to play, it's very much a federal/state thing, with some additional politics thrown in, and a whole lot of 'facts will come out soon' type of thing.

Pretty simple though, as Nadal, Medvedev and any reasonable person have said - if he wanted to play he should've got vaccinated / if he had a valid medical exemption, he'd be playing.

As of this moment, we have good news for those planning to attend this tournament.  A judge in Australia has reinstated Mr. Novak Djokovic's visa, overturning the federal immigration officials' ruling, thus allowing him entry into the country to play the Australian Open tennis tournament.  He will join the other three players who have received exemptions for the competition.

This may smoothen the path for some of the table tennis participants in Oceania.

Thanks.

Glad to hear that Novax Djokovic can now play in the 2021 ITTF-Oceania Championships - that ruling must have been a real shot in the arm for him! Wink
