Turns out he injured somewhere around his thumb during warmup on the day of MT (not specified but 9/4, which would explain why he skipped the position matches against KAZ and IRI the next day), that it would be a lie if it did not affect him, but whether it be techniques, tactics, psyche as well as injuries, it is his responsibility. On 1-3 Noroozi, Harimoto said he felt ok during practice but things were still different in the match, and he couldn't handle Noroozi's serve in their first encounter. He praised Noroozi for having very good serves and making few errors in the rallies. Interesting insight from Tanaka on 3-2 WCQ. He expresses his gratitude to his physiotherapist 香川英信/KAGAWA Hidenobu for body maintenance and bench coach 李龍�£�/Li Longfei for game plan. On perfectly handling WCQ's shovel serve at 12:12 in G2, Tanaka says that in the MT match between Harimoto and WCQ, he learned that the shovel serve was mostly topspin, and while he was prepared, that turned out to be case in the match. He is glad that intel proved useful. Even though he wasn't as confident in the rallies, they were easier to handle than he imagined and that gave him confidence. 5 CIC 6 Hirano 7 DHK 8 Batra Hirano's luck has been pretty terrible in this Olympic cycle. There is a 50% chance of getting drawn in the quarter with either SYS or WYD and 25% with SYS and she happens to get the short end of the stick. CIC and DHK are in the two quarters without CNT but CIC will face Kim Kumyong again and if she wins will meet SHW, which won't be easy given her state. I just noticed in the week 38 ranking list, Miu Hirano dropped two spots to WR#16. Hopefully, she can maintain a top 16 ranking for the WTT Finals in December. Hopefully, she does well at the Asian Games singles to get some extra points. She's not listed in the players list for Star Contender Lanzhou. Right behind her is Miwa Harimoto at WR#17. Miwa got a wildcard into Star Contender Lanzhou. No such luck for Hirano :(.

Can't wait to see Miyazaki speak about fairness with a straight face after this. Selecting players that you don't trust, don't feel safe and don't want to field in actual matches is fair to them? What's the point of having Oikawa and Matsushita sit there if they couldn't even offload some of the pressure when necessary, the least that they could do? The team lineup is so inflexible they can't even mix it up, every team knows and hence prepares for Harimoto as 1st singles, Togami as 2nd singles and Yoshimura as 3rd singles. The revamped selection system ends up being a farce because of rigidity.
Look at South Korea. Yoo Namkyu *bleep* up the last Olympic cycle with the "infinite/endless competition". LJH has a poor track record in internal selections. SYB was still recovering from her wrist injury last year after WTTC 2021 and because of that wasn't even on the KNT since she couldn't participate in the national team tryout. Check out the original lineups before the Asian Games were postponed. Yes, they chose to redo the selections. What did Japan do? Stick with the original lineups. The women are more or less identical with the current standings, with Ito and Sato in 3rd and 5th, who have chosen to not participate. But the men? M. Yoshimura, Oikawa and Matsushita are ranked 8th, 9th and 14th, respectively, whereas Tanaka, Shinozuka and R. Yoshiyama are ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th. Hirano says she was able to exert more pressure on her opponent than she did at Tokyo 2020. It's just that the last point was too far away. But the contents were decent, and she will reflect on it and work towards the next goal.

More comments from Hirano. She says overcoming South Korea yesterday, though painful, was a good test that got her more sophisticated. She adds that the ability to determine the last 1 or 2 points is very important and that never to give in easily, that the chances are always there once the score gets to 9:9.

Comments from Hayata, Hirano and Harimoto at the post-match conference.
Hayata says this is the first time she feels she was able to compete against CNT players. Though she feels her strength came short, she displayed what she practiced, which is a big step for her. Hirano says this is the most competitive team match that she has experienced in her history of team event, that it was very difficult to take 1 game off of China in the past, but that gap has narrowed bit by bit. She thinks the CNT players are still very strong in clutch moments and she should work on that more. Harimoto says she didn't have many opportunities to play top CNT players and so didn't know how much to expect. She feels the gap was not as big in the match, which is amazing.
