A Douban user has just noticed Ito and Sato have withdrawn from the Asian Games. According to the date, the roster was silently changed on 6/6 without notice. Nagasaki is now the 4th member.

With the assurance of Hayata in WS, WD and XD, the resurgence of Hirano in WS and WD, the ascendance of Kihara in WS(staring at Ito for stealing her XD partner), even Ito can't deny her outlook for Paris 2024 is getting dire, admitting that "I'd be in a difficult situation if I don't join the T.League" and saying that "the JTTA has yet to clarify"?

https://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/tabletennis/news/2022/07/024535.html

Will be interesting how Ishikawa, Hirano, Nagasaki, and Harimoto handle having only 1 week between tournaments considering jet lag.  Miu Hirano especially has been playing every tournament.  Tournament weariness and jet lag could become a factor.

In the previous round(WTT CT Zagreb and FEE Otocec), Hirano was the biggest winner(280+150=430 WR pts, WR45 to WR17).

In this round(WTT SCT/CS/FEE ESS and CT Tunis), the biggest winner and loser are no doubt Ishikawa(210+90+35+=335+ WR pts w/o running into the CNT until SF, WR11 to WR9) and Hirano(75+15+35=75 WR pts, WR17 to WR18).

Hirano wasting time with Ishikawa in WD after Tokyo 2020 and WTTC 2021 is beyond words.

Another factor to take into consideration in the T.League Individual Tournament is the seeding/draw order, which is based on T.League Wins. Because the Japan Ranking Points a player earns depends on how far he/she makes it in the tournament, a more talented and skilled player who didn't play many T.League matches may have a bad draw and may exit earlier in the tournament than a less talented and skilled player who played many T.League matches and may have gotten a better draw. The guidelines for the seeding/draw order can be found here.

I also translated the seeding/draw order guidelines below:

1. 2022 All Japan Table Tennis Championships (general division) winner
2. Nojima T-League 2021-2022 Most singles wins in the season
* Victory Match Wins are included in the number of T.League 21-22 Season Singles wins (If the number of wins is the same, the player with the higher winning percentage will be seeded higher.)
3. Players who do not fall under the above will be decided in order by the Japan Table Tennis Association Strengthening Headquarters
4. The order of the draws are (1st, 2nd), (3rd, 4th), (5th, 6th), (7th, 8th), (9th-12th), (13th-16th), (17th-24th).

Based on my calculations these are the likely seedings:

Men's Seedings

*Number of wins in the 21-22 T.League Season are in Parenthesis.

  1. Togami Shunsuke (6 T.League Wins) (2022 All Japan Champion)
  2. Oikawa Mizuki (19)
  3. Sone Kakeru (11)
  4. Niwa Koki (11)
  5. Morizono Masataka (10)
  6. Yoshimura Maharu (9)
  7. Harimoto Tomokazu (8)
  8. Uda Yukiya (6)
  9. Aida Satoshi (5)
  10. Matsushima Sora (4)
  11.  Shinozuka Hiroto (3)
  12. Arinobu Taimu (3)
  13. Ueda Jin (2)
  14. Yoshiyama Ryoichi (0)
  15. Yokotani Jo (0)
  16. Matsushita Taisei (0)

Men's Seedings

*Number of wins in the 21-22 T.League Season are in Parenthesis.

*Notable Omission: Haruna Ojio

  1. Ito Mima (0 T.League Wins) (2022 All Japan Champ)
  2. Kihara Miyuu (16)
  3. Odo Satsuki (13)
  4. Hashimoto Honoka (12)
  5. Ando Minami (12)
  6. Hayata Hina (11)
  7. Mori Sakura (11)
  8. Nagasaki Miyu (10)
  9. Shibata Saki (9)
  10. Harimoto Miwa (8)
  11. Yokoi Sakura (7)
  12. Kato Miyu (7)
  13. Sato Hitomi (6)
  14. Hirano Miu (5)
  15. Ishikawa Kasumi (4)
  16. Idesawa Kyoka (3)
  17. Aso Reina (2)
  18. Nanba Yurika (2)
  19. Narumoto Ayami (0)
  20. Matsushima Miku (0)
  21. Nomura Moe (0)
  22. Kimura Mitsuho (0)
  23. Yumoto Fuwa (0)
  24. Edahiro Ai (0)
Expect fireworks even in the early rounds. Togami (1st) is guaranteed to face either Harimoto (7th) or Uda (8th) in the QF if they all advance. 50% chance Ito (1st) faces either Hirano or Ishikawa (13th-16th) in the R16. 50% chance Kihara (2nd) faces either Hirano or Ishikawa (13th-16th) in the R16. Ito and Hayata can face each other as early as the QF if they both advance.

Even if the JTTA Selection Criteria is eventually changed to match the current criteria of the IOC/ITTF where the Top 2 players in WR by June 18, 2024 qualify, the draw of this tournament is still important because JTTA has announced that the representatives for the 2023 WTTC in Durban, South Africa will be the Top 5 players in Total Japan Ranking Points. The cutoff is after the "3rd Road to Paris Selection Meeting" held on November 12th and 13th, 2022. Full JTTA selection criteria for the 2023 WTTC can found here.

It's 5 months late but now is actually a better time to respond after WTT SCT/CS/FEE ESS. It's difficult to say for certain Ito has peaked but it's safe to say Ito has plateaued. It's particularly obvious in WD, where opponents try to break through by gunning for her. It's less obvious in WS because she can hide it with more freedom on placement of serve, but you can see that she has trouble keeping up in longer points. As long as her opponent can get past the first 3 or 5 shots(by spinning up their shots as DHK noted), then Ito's percentage goes down significantly. IIRC, DHK at Austria Open 2018 and CIC at WTGF 2018 were the first besides CNT players to successfully exploit that weakness of her game. Due to her small stature, Ito has thus far failed to come up with effective countermeasures other than all those superfluous serve motions.

Quote Hayata/Ito 3-2 JJH/YHE
As with last time, Ito couldn't keep up in some points. Ishida should've noticed by now.

Quote Very intensive brainstorming after taking G1 for the TPE/HKG pair, where Chen Szu-yu had the most air time. Basically, they're going for Ito here.

http://mytabletennis.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=91735&PID=1128822&title=european-summer-series-2022-7-1122#1128822
Quote Ito's serve is a double-edge sword. Hayata often misses on the 3rd ball because SYS just redirects Ito's spin back at her. If Ito can't get an advantage early on, then once into the rally, her shot quality tops out sooner than the other 3.

At this point, JTTA should break up the pair and raise the ranking of Hayata/Kihara, Hayata/Hirano and Hayata/Harimoto just for a change.

Regarding the draw, JTTA does it a little differently, 5/6 and 7/8 instead of 5/6/7/8, 9-12 and 13-16 instead of 9-16 and then 17-24. Well, a picture speaks a thousand words.

Thanks, for pointing out that the T.League website stats didn't include playoff games, zeio! Thank you also for the intensive research and for the visualization of the possible draw outcomes. Thumbs Up

It's a little strange how they do the T-League ranking.  Hirano, who has a 100% win rate at 5-0, is ranked quite a bit lower than Sakura Yokoi, who has a 33.3% win rate at 7-14.  She's penalized for not being utilized much by her team (through no fault of her own).

Strange indeed. Encouraging teams to field their best players as much as possible is understandable. And for choosing MVPs, singles wins make sense and that was most often the reasoning for season 2018/19-2020/21. For season 2021/22, they (finally) gave them to those who assisted the team the most.

But for seeding, using singles wins and winning percentage when tied is comical as we've seen. If we go by win-lose difference and singles wins or winning percentage when tied, then the end result is not that much different but avoids the issue of singles wins and winning percentage(Aso also at 100%).

I believe it was reported that Hirano purposely greatly reduced her league play to concentrate on transforming her game to one more competitive in this evolving sport.  Her improvement via this effort has been outstanding.

Thanks.
