2023 WTT Handbook and Calendar Update and Changes

Happy New Year Everyone! As we enter 2023, I just wanted to detail the new changes introduced for 2023 WTT events. WTT updated its handbook last December 24, 2022. You can view the 2023 WTT Handbook (WTT Series and Feeder Series) under the Technical Documents Section of the WTT Website. Here are the pertinent changes:

WTT Grand Smash
  • Increased number of Mixed Doubles pairs from 16 to 24 (Page 17)
  • Increased number of Seeded Singles Players in the Main Draw from 8 to 16. (Page 38)
  • Singles Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and Final is now best of 7. (Previously only SF and F were best of 7 while QF and earlier rounds were best of 5.) (Page 21)
WTT Contender and Star Contender Series
  • Added a Qualifying Draw to the Mixed Doubles event. (Previously, Mixed Doubles only had a Main Draw of 16 with 14 Highest Ranked Pairs and 2 Wild Cards) This change addresses the vicious cycle where some Mixed Doubles pairs cannot enter events due to low WR but also cannot gain WR points because they can't enter events due to low WR. This is a welcome addition given how important Mixed Doubles is for the Olympics. (pages 19-20)
  • Now, only the Singles Final is best of 7. (Previously both SF and F were best of 7 while QF and earlier rounds were best of 5.) (Page 21)
  • Play Down Restrictions (PDR) Priority-  Item 3. "The Host is allowed to determine who from the entered Top 20 players will be accepted to fill the PDR positions up to one (1) week after the entry deadline. In case the Host elects not to determine the PDR positions the players will be accepted by ranking in reversed order (from #20 to #1)." Previously, players under PDR were accepted by ranking in normal order (from #1 to 20) and the host had no discretion to choose who to accept from the entered Top 20 players. (Page 27)
WTT Feeder Series
  • All Singles and Doubles Matches are now best of 5. Previously, all Singles Main Draw Matches were best of 7. (Page 23)
WTT Finals and WTT Champions
  • Same as before, only Semi Finals and Finals are best of 7 while earlier rounds are best of 5.
  • The only change is event name to WTT Finals from WTT Cup Finals. This is likely in line with Board of Directors Resolution B-25 (Page 30 of 2022 ITTF BoD Working Documents) where majority want to bring back the ITTF World Cup. Originally, WTT wanted to merge the World Cup and World Tour Grand Finals into the WTT Cup Finals, but it appears Member Associations still want to have separate World Cup event because of its historical value and prestige.
2023 Event Calendar
  • The current 2023 Event Calendar on the ITTF Website omits many planned second half of the year events. However, the ITTF Website on December 6, 2022 actually originally posted the full planned calendar. You can use wayback machine to view this. 
  • The schedule shows a planned Grand Smash in China in November 2023, a WTT Champions event in the USA in August, and WTT China Hub/Series of Events in September, and WTT Contender events in Brazil and Sweden among others.
2023 China National Table Tennis Team Coaching Shuffling
  • Last December 29, 2022, the China National Table Tennis Team concluded a 3-day coach selection and communication meeting.
  • Li Sun was appointed Chief Coach of the Chinese National Table Tennis Team
  • Wang Hao was named Men's Team Head Coach and Ma Lin was named Women's Team Head Coach
  • Xiao Zhan was named Head of the Mixed Doubles Coaching Group.

Happy New Year to you too and thanks for the great updates apacible!

I've always thought at least QF and above matches should be bo7 and am happy to read that that will be true for the Smash.  But then WTT decides to go the other way for Contender/Star Contender/Feeder.  

I like the idea of the host selecting PDR player.  I actually had assumed that was already the case but I'm glad to see it is now.

I didn't realize there is a planned WTT Champions event in the USA ... nice!

Hi apacible, thank you for taking the time to compare the documents side by side and for highlighting the updates!

I didn't mind that the matches for the Smash were best of 5 until and including the QF. It's nice to see some upsets.

A man is the women's national team head coach and It seems like China is on par with Iran and Afghanistan when it's about recognizing women's capabilities to choose what's best for them.

Why is it wrong for a man to be the head of the WNT?

There are simply more men competing in competitive sports. The best person for the job in those fields are likelier to be male.

We will see over time whether the amazing WNT or recent generations are interested or able to get more senior coaching positions.

They are also on par with the US then - if we look at their Women’s soccer and volleyball national teams Wink

Not a good look for the ITTF/WTT to post this article:


and not include the omitted events you mentioned above.  I wonder if they are having trouble getting commitments to those events.

2023 WTT Events Prospectus:
The WTT Website doesn't post the Prospectus for WTT events. The prospectus contains useful information such as prize money, playing format, and entry deadlines. Fortunately the Federation Francaise de Tennis de Table (Table Tennis France) website generally posts the prospectus of the WTT events. You can just check the link/FFTT Website regularly for updates in case the FFTT adds more prospectuses in the future.

So far the prospectuses for the following events have been posted:
Feel free to repost the prospectus links when the respective event threads are created/or have these prospectus links edited into posts of already existing event threads.

After seeing the latest changes, especially the incessant meddling with the bo5 and bo7 games, I don't feel like "promoting WTT events anymore (starting new/maintaining current threads)", even though I smelled it way back in 2018. We're worse off than when Adham Sharara was at the helm.

Edited my original post to fix most of the links of the Prospectuses using Wayback Machine. Seems the links stopped working after January 16, 2023. Unfortunately, the links of the Prospectuses for WTT Contender Durban and WTT Contender Doha 2023 couldn't be fixed through Wayback Machine, but thanks to zeio's post, we still have access to it through the Hellenic Table Tennis Federation.

Thanks for the heads up zeio. Just compared the 2022 and 2023 WTT Handbooks, and indeed the phrase 

"Players participating at events with black flooring are not permitted to play matches wearing a black playing shirt." was added on page 67 of the 2023 version.


"The color of the floor is always posted on the event prospectus. We strongly recommend this be checked in advance." 


I guess another reason to have the Prospectus on hand is to see whether or not the players can wear their black uniforms during a particular event... Ermm Most WTT events (especially the top tier events) use black flooring with black tables. 


I'm surprised they chose to target player's black uniforms instead of targeting the black tables used in all WTT events with black flooring. The rule that opposing players should not wear the same colored shirt is also disregarded in WTT events. The latter two situations, in my opinion, causes more confusion to spectators than players wearing black uniforms when the flooring is black.
