Just in case you missed it, Paris Olympics Singles Spots for the CNT will go to the top 2 players in Olympic Points from designated competitions from May 8, 2023 to May 7, 2024. Singles players for Paris 2024 aren't chosen by coaches discretion anymore.

WCQ did himself a favor by beating ML in the 2023 WTTC, which puts him ahead in the Olympic Points Race for 1 of the 2 singles spots. Theoretically however, ML can still catch up.

You can follow the CNT Paris Olympic Singles Race thread for more details and updates.

Ah okay, I didn't think qualifying was primarily about how people felt, but it's okay, at least you have made how you feel clear and I understand you better now.  China had set a precedent of sending World Champions to the Olympics and Ma Long didn't meet the standard at the time, though it was partly because they reduced the number of spots available.  I don't think it was unfair for ML not to go given that the players that went were players that did better than him at the WTTC in 2011.  I think however you feel about that, that is very different from ML being selected over players who actually beat him at the WTTC (Wang Chuqin) in this case.

You read too quick. What I wrote implied that Wang should get the 2nd spot.

Nah, my point is that bad parallel to support a good conclusion doesn't make the parallel better.  Ma Long lost to Wang Hao in 2011 so he didn't get the spot in 2012.  Wang Chuqin not getting the spot in 2024 after beating Ma Long in 2023 would *not* be a parallel.  You are implying that Ma Long should have gotten the spot in 2012, but that had nothing to do with Ma Long's performance at the World Championships (below Wang Hao) or his ranking (below Wang Hao at the time of the nomination).  In fact, Ma Long was higher rated than maybe Zhang Jike, though that changed briefly later in the year after the World Cup.  But that would not be a parallel here because Zhang Jike was World Champ and Ma Long isn't now.

Oh, that Tieba thread about WH is actually a meme thread poking fun at those who grilled WH for all the losses in commercial events, AKA WTT.

Here's actually what he said. Very humble. LJK beating Harimoto has left him the most impression.

CNT already denied ma long 4x wttc back in Houston

they will deny 3x og next year in Paris

ma long doesn't have anything to prove anymore, although in a parallel universe it would be fun to think if he still wanted to play, and he emigrated to another country and played to win for himself and disband the well-oiled machine that is the CNT, but that won't happen

If Ma Long gets the 2nd MS spot instead of Wang Chuqin, it would feel like Ma Long not playing MS in London back in 2012.

Despite the little blip in fortunes (if you can call it that) for the ladies, I feel like the men's team is still weaker than the women's team, the women's team has held that consistency down for years for virtually all tournaments till this one(except that one Asian Championships), and only Japan has 1-2 players that can beat them. But since 2017 they've been cracks in the men's team defence from the attacks on all sides; from the meteoric rise of Tomokazu, to the world cup loss in 2017, Dima having a great 2017, to Hugo, Woojin and LYJ giving them headaches in 2018, Harimoto winning 2 of 2 in WTTTC sounded alarm bells, to the string of losses FZD, LSD and LJK has had in the last year,   and the new threats from Europe in the post-pandemic period. Wang Hao has oversaw a lot of uncharacteristic losses since he took the reins in the post- Tokyo era, and I believe this WTTC was just a fig leaf for China; Ma Long is leaving soon from the look of things; FZD, WCQ, LJK, LGY and LSD are far from invincible and have a lot of work to do. The Women's team problems are gonna be exposed post 2024 depending on how WYD, CXT, QTY keep up.

Maybe Wang Hao is just patting himself on the back for a job well done at this tournament.

I think you are weighing matches without stakes too heavily.  The usual goal of the Chinese was to peak at the big events and ro use the tour for preparation.  This was much easier under the old ELO based system that rewarded playing strength over tournament performances.

The women managed to get the top 4 spots on tour pretty quickly. The men didn't but they at least got close enough to win all the medals again as their seeding worked out 3 spots and they got lucky that Liang got seeded into the Harimoto quarter. Obviously , the men have always faced more challenges than the women.  That a performance like this was possible is a credit to the CNT.  Harimoto, the Lebruns etc. still have things to prove.  Is anyone really betting against a Fan vs Wang Olympic Singles final next year?  Or in the World Cup this year?

Stakes are always the key.  Don't treat matches without stakes like they are matches with stakes.

Xiaoxiaokui But this time, Harimoto didn’t defend with his forehand, rather, he counterlooped. This is considered an improvement. I hope that Harimoto will not be afraid of using the forehand because of missing the key point. He has to stick to it as Harimoto is the only one who can challenge the national team, otherwise it's all CNT, has got to find something for the coaching staff to do, can't be idle

Oh in 2015, I think that was a given.  I am happy that she won the 2019 WTTC, we have to accept that as sufficient compensation - same with Chen Meng Olympic gold in singles.

I didn't sleep yet. Typically I'll fall asleep 10 minutes before the men's final and waking up I'll do as much as I can to watch it not knowing the result but it's still not the same when we know it's already over.

GO WCQ!

Men's final is at 2pm local time meaning 5am PST and 8am EST.

East coast has it easy again :) Not sure I'll stay awake or wake up early.

You can move to the East Coast.Shocked

Alright guys, who thinks WCQ takes down FZD tomorrow?? - troubadour

It is possible and it may turn out 4 -1 or 4 -2. Regardless, I hope both players will entertain us with the best match for the tournament.

On the women's side, I bet on SYS to win; maybe 4 -1 or 4 - 0 ?

A Seattle friend sent me a link to that vidoe when it came out 6 years ago and I was blown away, we both thought he was the future world champion and here he is the night before his chance to make it happen!

Will take a lot from WCQ as I don't see anything about his game that shows he took the prior lessons from FZD to heart.  I mean LJK at least made some extra attempts to switch direction and couldn't rely on backhand wars.  Will be cool of WCQ wins though,  the triple crown will be good and it will cement FZD as a guy who could have been.  I think his underachievement in big events gave Ma Long the obvious GOAT title more than anything else.  Because if FZD had done his job, he would be the true GOAT candidate and he wouldn't have needed the CNT to help him to get his title by blocking Ma Long in 2021.

So as much as Iblike both guys, I will be rooting for Big Head tomorrow while knowing he is likely to lose.
