    Posted: 05/16/2023 at 1:19pm
Hi Guys, China Table Tennis Association (CTTA) has just announced their selection criteria for the Paris 2024 Olympic Team. Unlike in Tokyo 2020, when the selection criteria was quite vague and it seemed it was CTTA's discretion who it selected for singles, this time, the selection criteria is quite clear. There is now an added interest in following events and WR points, since this has a direct impact on who plays singles for CNT. Let this thread serve as the source of updates and discussion of this very tight race. Kindly see this Article for the full details: https://english.news.cn/20230515/fc43a7b55fef4855b3eb3080f96a601c/c.html

In summary:
Singles- Top 2 Chinese players in Olympic Points (not to be confused with WR points) by May 7, 2024. Olympic points consists of the total of (1) his/her WR points as of the May 7, 2024 WR list and (2) any bonus points earned by the CNT players in designated competitions from May 8, 2023 to May 7, 2024 according to the Points Table made by CTTA. See this post for a detailed table on the bonus points.
Mixed Doubles- Top-ranked Chinese Mixed Doubles Pair when the May 7, 2024 WR list is released.
Team- If the aforementioned two pathways cannot select three players per gender for the team events, the last spot in the roster will be determined by the CTTA coaching group.
P-card/alternate/reserve- CTTA coaching group's discretion.

Some observations:
  • The relevant ranking list is that of May 7, 2024 and not June 18, 2024 as recommended in the Paris 2024 Qualification system. The rationale for this is probably because CTTA would like to put a premium on the players' performance in the upcoming 2023 WTTC from May 20 to May 28, 2023 in determining the Singles spots. Had CTTA gone with the later date of June 18, 2024, the 2023 WTTC WR points would already be expired. Therefore, the relevant events in determining the Singles spots are those from May 8, 2023 to May 7, 2024. The 2023 WTTC will be the first event contributing to this very important Olympic Points period.
  • It's safe to assume that the CNT Olympic Singles players will be amongst the 5 singles players chosen for the 2023 WTTC because of the volume of WR and Bonus points offered. In fact, the World Singles Champion is very likely to be one of the two singles players in Paris because of the 2000 WR points + 4000 Bonus Points offered. Unless there are a lot more Grand Smash events around the corner (Only 2024 Singapore Smash is confirmed and the 2023 China Smash is still up in the air), it will be hard to catch up if one performs badly or doesn't participate in 2023 WTTC.
  • The pairing of WCQ/SYS will be heavily favored to play Mixed Doubles in Paris because of their participation in the 2023 WTTC. Unless WCQ/SYS disappoint in the 2023 WTTC, and CTTA gives other pairings a shot in the next Grand Smashes (like WCQ/WMY), it will be hard to catch up in WR points. Aside from Grand Smashes and WTTC which offer 2000 WR points in Doubles, the only way to earn doubles points is through WTT SCT (Max 600pts), WTT CT (Max 400pts), and WTT Feeder (Max 125pts). Playing well in one WTTC or one Grand Smash is equivalent to 3-5 smaller events, so the lucky pairs chosen for these big events are likely the only serious contenders in Mixed Doubles for the Olympics.

Thanks for the creating a thread for this. Was planning to post this in the WTTC 2023 trial thread but got caught up in other matters.

For the singles, it has a low probability to happen but it could be possible that a player be eligible while he does not belong to the top 2 in the ranking.

Thanks for posting the links to the Chinese Source. It seems some of the details of the Selection Criteria for the 2 Olympic Singles slots were omitted in the English Translation of the Xinhua News Article I cited.
I will edit my first post accordingly. However, to summarize, CTTA has its own Olympic Points Selection System for Singles.

A CNT player's Olympic Points is the total of (1) his/her WR points as of the May 7, 2024 WR list and (2) any bonus points earned by the CNT players in designated competitions from May 8, 2023 to May 7, 2024 according to the Points Table made by CTTA. See the points table below (thanks zeio for linking it):

For Singles Events, players get bonus points for finishing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd (SF).
  • Tier 1- 2023 World Championships (1st- 4000, 2nd- 2000, 3rd-1000)
  • Tier 2- Hangzhou Asian Games, World Cup, WTT Grand Smash (1st- 3000, 2nd- 1500, 3rd-750)
  • Tier 3- 2023 WTT Finals, 2023 Asian Championships, Asian Cup (1st- 2000, 2nd- 1000, 3rd-500)
  • Tier 4- WTT Champions (1st- 1000, 2nd- 500, 3rd-250)
For Team Events, players get bonus points for every singles win in a team match. The events included are 2024 World Team Table Tennis Championships, Asian Games, Team World Cup, and Asian Championships.
(Final- 800 pts per win, SF- 400 pts per win, QF- 200pts per win, R16- 100 pts per win)

Have to agree with zeio though. While it's ultimately up to the players to rack of wins for Olympic Points, when the tournament has a National Entry Restriction, CTTA still determines who plays. CTTA determines which 2 players play singles in the Asian Games and Asian Cup and what the CNT's team lineup will be in team matches, and these choices will affect the number of opportunities players have to earn Olympic points. The players chosen will have a head start over those not chosen. (Much like how Harimoto and Niwa had an edge over Mizutani in gaining WR points because they had the opportunity to play the 2019 Men's World Cup).

Finally got around to posting this.

The CTTA published the rules for tournament entries on the 25th. The WR will be used. According to Tieba users, WMY had to beat CM in the SF of WTTC 2023 to reach WR2. With WMY and WYD out, SYS and CM are pretty much set to play the WS at Asian Games 2022.

At first glance, it seems fairer than Tokyo 2020. If I understand correctly, the role of the CTTA coaching group has been markedly reduced. This is a good sign!

CNT Men's Standings Race to Paris 2024 Singles

CNT Women's Standings Race to Paris 2024 Singles

These are the standings for Team China's Race to Paris 2024 Singles after WTTC 2023

Because of the high amount of bonus points awarded for the WTTC 2023, it feels like World Champions FZD and SYS are almost locked for one of the singles slots for Paris 2024. The race will likely be for the other singles spot.

WMY's QF exit this WTTC 2023 hurts a lot since the bonus points she lost out on from not even making the Top 3 triples or even quadruples her gap with CM. As zeio also mentioned, WMY lost out on precious WR points, so it may also cost WMY her singles spot in the Asian Games in favor of CM further depriving herself the opportunity to get herself back in the race. There's still hope for WMY though since there will be some expiration of WR points in July, so we'll have to see if WMY can still overtake CM in WR before the entry deadline for the Asian Games.

The gap between WCQ in ML in the Olympic Points race is a lot closer since ML at least made the SF in WTTC 2023. However, ML is less likely to make up ground in the WR race to play the Asian Games Singles event because ML has a lot of WR points expiring in July as compared to WCQ which will only widen their WR gap.

Will we see ML and WMY participate in some WTT Contenders in July and August to catch up in WR and try and secure an Asian Games Singles Slot? LOL Probably unlikely, but it would be cool if they did just like how in 2019 Niwa, Hayata, Ishikawa, and Hirano were flying across the world to play in Challenge Plus Series in their quests to improve their WR to try to earn a Tokyo 2020 Singles Spot.
