What's the best Non-Toxic, Non-VOC alternative to expensive table tennis glue? I have been using Tear Mender, which works, but I wonder if there's something better out there.
Note: Rubber Cement is not the answer. ;-) ![]() Edited by tommyzai - 10/10/2020 at 1:28pm |

industrial velcro. Makes it reasonably easy to EJ and if you hit the table and it comes loose it's all fine.

To me it's all the same as that. Just varying degrees of how it's been handled. Aka heat, age, seal quality. I rarely use latex (no pun intended) but that's my impression

Yes, its called Copydex. It comes from the UK but you can usually find it relatively inexpensively on ebay. It is thicker and more consistent than Tear Mender and has more ammonia content and so tends not to curdle on the blade. I've have received bad batches of Tear Mender before which is why I looked for an alternative and Copydex has been reliable so far.

Why isn't rubber cement the answer? I even glue OX LP with Elmer's without using glue sheet. |

I am using Revolution 3.0 after seeing someone in my club remove the glue from his old rubber in about 20 seconds. You do have to use several layers.

Rubber Cement works good but is nasty toxic. My lungs can't even handle a particle of dust.

I'd love to try it . . . if it were 1/2 that price. That's a bit steep for less than 2oz. Still, we're grateful for the share.

I used something about 10+years ago . . . it came in a tub and spread on. It was white and non-toxic. I can't remember what it was. ;-0 It was sort of like the consistency of Elmer's Glue Sticks, but a little softer.

The best affordabe stuff for gluing works, some 11 USD Per Litre bottle.
/Be happy/ Actually, the milky white liquid one finds in the bottle is a heveya tree latex soap preserved with an ammonia additive. Excellent adhesive power. |

I've been a Nittaku FineZip fan for years... and recently picked up a bottle of Revolution 3 glue. Wow. Took me a few rackets to get used to but it's great . Applies evenly and is self-leveling.

The idea of using inexpensive Halloween latex glue is the absolute best solution among those that deserve the 2020 Cheapo award.
If it works as well as TearMender, it's a winner.

I'll use cream cheese if it works . . . the goal is to find less expensive, but effective and safe alternatives to overpriced table tennis glue.

I use Copydex. Cheap, comes of really easily from the rubber and has a good bond. Frankly better than most TT glues that will destroy your rubber if you try to remove it. It almost seems on purpose...

I second this. It's good stuff. I even found an old bottle, that was half dried out, added some water from the tap and it worked great. It's 8 euro in the hardware store and the bottle lasts a year easy.

Been using this for 10 years, bought gallons for my clubs
![]() Some club put their badge and resell it. You'd be surprised that many many TT glues out there actually the same glue as this. https://www.demco.com/demco-reg-rubber-liquid-cream-glue Just the best, IMO |

Copydex is inexpensive, safe, VOC-free, multipurpose, effective,
bonds well and holds well but is easy to peel off, since it is latex
based. ![]() |

I tried Copydex and it is great. Obvious solution in UK, it's not available in North America on a consistent basis.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/500ml-Copydex-Adhesive-Glue-Craft-Fabric-Carpets-DIY-Home-Safe-Multi-Use-Stick/293764699619 is great a price at $17 but $27 shipping to the USA from UK is a bit much, even though at that insane shipping price we still end up at a cool $4.40/50ml. WATERY GLUE IS A STRONG DESTROYER ON WOODEN MATERIALS. NEVER ADD WATER TO WG..
STIGA GLUE is the best NEUTRAL substance upon plywoods as having minimum water content 20%. High viscosity WGs, thick consistency is the best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= COOKERY CORN STARCH FOR CONDITIONING WB GLUE Pick up some cookery Corn Starch for getting a thin ranny WG up to high viscosity glue.. Corn Starch is most famous as an effective natural thicker... YOU will have final product much like a cookery cream easy to spread over wooden materials. /Be happy/ Edited by igorponger - 10/15/2020 at 7:38pm |

I hear you. Have you tried the glue I mentioned? Perhaps not. It is a rather thick paste, our clubs have been using them for over 10 years. We used at the most, 10% of hot water to dilute it. Never had any case of damaging wood/blades. I have used it on my old blades for years and years. Fast drying, easy to clean from rubbers and blades. (I am the gluer/rubber cutter) for so many members for our clubs, btw. ![]() Edited by dual700 - 10/16/2020 at 2:06am |

Given the cost of TT rubber, glue is really cheap. I get great results with Nittaku Finezip a d especially Free Chaque II. Stuff like Tearmender can work but it's trickier to use. I stopped loo, looking, for alterna, I want something that works perfectly every time.

I am on the side of those who want to avoid contact between the blade and the water of the glue. After priming generously the sponge with Tearmender (3 coats adding up to 3 grams to the weight of the rubber), I let that glue dry completely and I apply on the blade 3 light coats of a mix of paper cement from the brand Best Test (75%) and Bestine (nasty stuff, manipulate outside only), their solvent (25%). By letting the glue dry completely on the blade too (it really does not take long but just let it dry overnight and outside if you want to be sure, that's what I do because why not...), we ensure no cheating because the VOC are gone and will not affect the sponge. This is the smartest method because it is easier, faster, cheaper and honest. We prime a rubber once and basta! I see a drawback, I must apply the glue on the blade outside and let the blade dry outside too; also when moving the rubber from blade to blade, the paper cement adds up on the sponge.
Another one... the evaporation of those Bestine nasty chemicals (heptane) in the atmosphere has a cost that I impose to all, that's the less cool part of it but it's better for the blade. What say you about that? Am I an hypocrite for advocating this? I commute to my office with my bike (4.2 miles, all flat), and you? let me guess... an environmentally friendly plug-in hybrid that burns gas and gets electricity from a coal-fired plant maybe? just kidding people ![]() I only do serves and the robot now until a vaccine is out and sure (tennis with people) and it's not like I am regluing often anyway. I've been the cutter/gluer for 2 clubs for over 10 yrs..
I glue and cut for free, so we buy that glue in gallons so the club can resell them too. Counting the Exacto knifes alone, I already finished my 2nd box, so 200 blades x 3 or 4 rubbers roughly 600 rubbers and more ![]() Sometimes I walk in the club people already waiting for me with their rubbers/blade for me to assemble, lol I have tried many glue, dhs, double fish, donic, free chack, R3, finezip, tear mender.. I am sticking with this. Can't beat it, especially when you are gluing for free
