Per the rules, automatic entries for MS/WS should happen 4 weeks prior to event start (10/29), which was 10/3 TUE (TTWR 2023 Week 40 – 3rd October 2023). This is unusual.

WTT Feeder Otocec 2023, which starts on 10/30, already has the "Player List" populated for MS/WS.

Since the WTT isn't doing their job properly; I'm just gonna let my imagination do it for them; I can see the top 32 players there plus wildcards... Yayyyy

How is Nicholas Lum ranked so high? I haven't really seen him having any major wins that would warrant his current ranking.

He is likely Oceania/Australian champion.  His continental points will be the key there.  Same with Adi Sareen and Finn Luu - maybe they have some way of sharing points across continental events that makes this make sense but obviously, those guys are a bit high.

Nicholas Lum: 500 pts from winning 2022 ITTF-Oceania Cup
Aditya Sareen: 500 pts from winning 2023 ITTF-Oceania Championships
Finn Luu: 350 pts from making finals of 2023 ITTF-Oceania Championships

Not sure what NextLevel means by "sharing points across continental events." In any case, only one continental result per player can count for the world ranking, so 500 points is the maximum one can get - which is quite a lot, of course.

Only one counts, but there are multiple opportunities ... Continental Champs/Cups/Games.  So one player can win a Continental Champ and a different player can win a Continental Cup, and each gets 500 pts for example.

Yes, 500 pts is huge.  It immediately puts you into top 40.  And then you don't even have to do anything else.

Not to pick on Aditya Sareen (a fine player), but he literally has 3 events in the past 12 months:

2023 ITTF-Oceania Championships Winner 500 pts
2023 WTT Youth Contender, Charleston 4 pts
2022 WTT Feeder, Fort Lauderdale 0 pts

That puts him at WR#39 ahead of WR#40 WCT who played fantastic at the Asian Games making the SF, and has also played many WTT tournaments in 2023 (and did reasonably well).

Thanks, pongfugrasshopper captured my main point perfectly and you can see how it helps many countries, including  (paradoxically) China.  In fact, as funny as it sounds, it also enables some interesting conspiracy theorizing.   China can encourage different players to win the Asian Cup, the Asian Championships and the Asian games because each player gets 500 or 1000 points or whatever only once.

The main reason it came to mind was that I saw how Quadri and Omar benefitted from spiltting the African Cup and African Championship titles.  It is harder to coordinate across countries, but Omar got injured somehow so... that said, he did give his countryman Saleh more points by being "injured".

So yes, Australia can have 3 players highly ranked since they own the Oceania region and all they have to do is get 2 different players to win the continental events.  Since they seem to be having Panamerican titles, it may be harder for the US girls to co-ordinate this, same with the Brazilian or US men.  But hopefully you can see what I was pointing out.

OK, I see the "conspiracy" aspect of it. Next time Lily loses to Amy or Amy loses to Adriana in one of these continental events, we know it was rigged Wink Then again, a second-place finish isn't too shabby either -  350 points puts you near the top 50. So let's hope table tennis remains a cheating-free sport as it has always been LOL

As for Adi Sareen, he just lost to Enzo Angles in the Princeton Pong Open, so what does that say about these players' rankings or ratings?

Pongfugrasshopper,

Do you have a link to the page that details what events Sareen played in to get his ranking?  Or is it something that has to be manually constructed?

Thanks,
NL

Calderano, Takahashi, Diaz, Zhang, and Wang are no longer listed - so it seems that WTT is generously allowing them to play Pan Am Games.

Kaufmann has received the host wildcard for the women.

WTT Taiyuan starting a day after WTT Frankfurt ends is crazy, China has made stretching the limits of their players the goal in the last 3rd of this year. Poor planning.

I just want Miu Hirano to do well here in order to secure a spot in the race to the WTT Finals.  Top 16 players on WTT Tour make it to the WTT Finals which will be held in Nagoya, Japan starting December 15, and she's sitting right at that #16 spot (tied in points w/ CIC).

Draws are out:

Hirano gets Miwa in 1st round.  Potential matchup with Hayata in 2nd round.

Felix has potential QF matchup with FZD.

The draws prove that Boll hates Japan and Kaufmann hates France.

Ito has the best chance of making the SF. The 3rd and 4th quarters are also filled with players to whom WMY and CM have lost before.

The men's side is much more exciting with all the repeat/revenge match-ups.

Gauzy has always something to say about everything...A BIG mouth as we say in french...
Well, it's normal, as a the host nation to give the remaining spots to local players...
What is not normal to me is: Lin Gaoyan, Lin Shidong, Qian Tianyi, Chen Xingtong....can't participate.
If you wan't to be fair, you have to take the first 32, whatever their nationalties.

The event is advertised as top 32, but is missing a lot of top 32 players like the ones you've mentioned. The event is also missing ZR, FSQ, KM, Kihara and Nagasaki. We're missing out on some potentially interesting matchups. Kihara recently beat WYD 3-0, for example.
