Today was the bomb...

I got to be within 3 inches of former table tennis world champion, Jiang Jialiang (we posed side by side for a sec for a picture but my camcorder malfunctioned at that exact moment )

He was "in town" somewhere in Union City, CA at a high school for a chinese atletics festival. He didn't really say much to me but he smiled.

I got his autograph on his training VCD, on a slip of paper, and on a ball
He was cool, tho he didn't care much when i said he was my role model.

I'll show the pic of the signed stuff tommorow. If i can or if u don't believe me.

Still i wanted a picture of him and me .

Awesome beyond belief Charlies !!!

I have seen this live but it is so great to rewatch it now, I think that one point when Appel admitted a net serve was a great moment, you could feel both players had an enormous respect of each other.

But the greatest team match 89 was IMO between sweden-korea 5:4, five hours plus of unbelievable TT, just unbelievable...

Datsukid, wouldn't you say that was a disappointment. I was hoping that he would at least play Shashin or Sean Lee in singles and see how much better he is, if at all. Since I was sitting right behind Jiang when he was resting, I heard Shashin come over and ask him if the doubles were all he was going to play. Jiang talked way too much and should've played more instead. I would say the whole thing was a waste of time, but I did get his autography while he was resting on a paddle and had a picture taken with him, so I guess it wasn't all for nothing.

charlies, Thank you so much for sharing with us these classical matches.

I still don't know what's wrong with Jiang's service. It looks like the umpire was blaming him for not throwing the ball with hand above the table surface, but from the slow motion, I think that was not true.

I too didn't see anything wrong with that serve. In any case, Appelgren threw away the next point and showed the true sportsmanship. However I think Jiang was somehow affected by that little incident and had a lot of unforced errors afterward.

charlie, thanks for sharing these beautiful matches.

Hello Charlie,

I am a big fan of the swedish players from the late 80s/early 90s.  I started a thread a few weeks ago asking if anybody had videos of the 89 match when Sweden beat China 5-0.  Thanks alot for the post.
