Fan Zhendong is so respected that no one is talking about Wang's triple crown chances which were just as real as Sun Yingshas

FZD pointed out the faint edge at 8:5 of G6. True World Champ.

I believe that CXT had an edge ball at the second game but cm didn’t point it out.

I'm surprised Korea didn't use the long serve and Jeon Jihee attack combo a lot like they used to good effect against Shasha and Manyu, maybe because Meng and Yidi arguably have more clinical forehands than Wang Manyu. Some things they tried worked, but China just found answers in the crucial points.

My prediction is Men’s Singles will be true to form.
WCQ owns ML - Done FZD owns WCQ - will be done tomorrow, 4-1 or 4-2. |

Will take a lot from WCQ as I don't see anything about his game that shows he took the prior lessons from FZD to heart. I mean LJK at least made some extra attempts to switch direction and couldn't rely on backhand wars. Will be cool of WCQ wins though, the triple crown will be good and it will cement FZD as a guy who could have been. I think his underachievement in big events gave Ma Long the obvious GOAT title more than anything else. Because if FZD had done his job, he would be the true GOAT candidate and he wouldn't have needed the CNT to help him to get his title by blocking Ma Long in 2021. So as much as Iblike both guys, I will be rooting for Big Head tomorrow while knowing he is likely to lose.

It is possible and it may turn out 4 -1 or 4 -2. Regardless, I hope both players will entertain us with the best match for the tournament. On the women's side, I bet on SYS to win; maybe 4 -1 or 4 - 0 ?

Just a confirmation for NA viewers:
Durban is UTC+2 and: Women's final is at 1pm local time meaning 4am PST and 7am EST. Men's final is at 2pm local time meaning 5am PST and 8am EST. East coast has it easy again :) Not sure I'll stay awake or wake up early. Edited by stiltt - 05/28/2023 at 6:38am |

I didn't sleep yet. Typically I'll fall asleep 10 minutes before the men's final and waking up I'll do as much as I can to watch it not knowing the result but it's still not the same when we know it's already over.

Is it the last realistic chance to become WC for CM? She'll be 31 next time.
WOW! she comes back at 2-3, can she tie for a decider?

Back in 2015/2016, Did we think Chen Meng and Zhu Yuling would end up with no WTTC titles to their names?

Oh in 2015, I think that was a given. I am happy that she won the 2019 WTTC, we have to accept that as sufficient compensation - same with Chen Meng Olympic gold in singles.

Old video, watched it once too. I wouldn't say it's anything very special, but the guy can play well - that's for sure. It's even fun to watch at 1.5 speed

从结果上看,是不是这次教练组对了?
In hindsight, was the coaching group correct this time? https://tieba.baidu.com/p/8431454209 女队真没想到!!!算是近20年来历届最差的世乒赛吗? I really didn't expect this for the women's team! ! ! Is this the worst WTTC in the past 20 years? https://tieba.baidu.com/p/8431616461 王皓:最终是我闪耀了德班,男线全奖杯+不输外战 Wang Hao: I stole the spotlight in Durban, all trophies for the men's line + no loss in foreign battles https://tieba.baidu.com/p/8432732086 2022年还以为国乒男队走下坡路了,结果今年重回巅峰! 我总是有种感觉2027 2028才是张本真£巅峰的时候 I always have a feeling that 2027-2028 is when Harimoto will truly peak https://tieba.baidu.com/p/8432058651
Xiaoxiaokui But this time, Harimoto didn’t defend with his forehand, rather, he counterlooped. This is considered an improvement. I hope that Harimoto will not be afraid of using the forehand because of missing the key point. He has to stick to it as Harimoto is the only one who can challenge the national team, otherwise it's all CNT, has got to find something for the coaching staff to do, can't be idle Edited by zeio - 05/29/2023 at 2:21pm |

Despite the little blip in fortunes (if you can call it that) for the ladies, I feel like the men's team is still weaker than the women's team, the women's team has held that consistency down for years for virtually all tournaments till this one(except that one Asian Championships), and only Japan has 1-2 players that can beat them. But since 2017 they've been cracks in the men's team defence from the attacks on all sides; from the meteoric rise of Tomokazu, to the world cup loss in 2017, Dima having a great 2017, to Hugo, Woojin and LYJ giving them headaches in 2018, Harimoto winning 2 of 2 in WTTTC sounded alarm bells, to the string of losses FZD, LSD and LJK has had in the last year, and the new threats from Europe in the post-pandemic period. Wang Hao has oversaw a lot of uncharacteristic losses since he took the reins in the post- Tokyo era, and I believe this WTTC was just a fig leaf for China; Ma Long is leaving soon from the look of things; FZD, WCQ, LJK, LGY and LSD are far from invincible and have a lot of work to do. The Women's team problems are gonna be exposed post 2024 depending on how WYD, CXT, QTY keep up. Maybe Wang Hao is just patting himself on the back for a job well done at this tournament.

I think you are weighing matches without stakes too heavily. The usual goal of the Chinese was to peak at the big events and ro use the tour for preparation. This was much easier under the old ELO based system that rewarded playing strength over tournament performances. The women managed to get the top 4 spots on tour pretty quickly. The men didn't but they at least got close enough to win all the medals again as their seeding worked out 3 spots and they got lucky that Liang got seeded into the Harimoto quarter. Obviously , the men have always faced more challenges than the women. That a performance like this was possible is a credit to the CNT. Harimoto, the Lebruns etc. still have things to prove. Is anyone really betting against a Fan vs Wang Olympic Singles final next year? Or in the World Cup this year? Stakes are always the key. Don't treat matches without stakes like they are matches with stakes.

That's an interesting parallel given that Ma Long got a bronze losing to Wang Hao (who got the spot) and Wang Chuqin beat Ma Long, who you would give the spot. In fact the parallel makes no sense.

CNT already denied ma long 4x wttc back in Houston
they will deny 3x og next year in Paris ma long doesn't have anything to prove anymore, although in a parallel universe it would be fun to think if he still wanted to play, and he emigrated to another country and played to win for himself and disband the well-oiled machine that is the CNT, but that won't happen
