Aww man, the choppers face each other right off the bat and the two young Germans as well. Looks like Boll will be tested right out the gate here. I guess with 6 Chinese it's pretty much unavoidable, but still, that's a lot of Chinese...There could well be only one German left after two rounds.

Also noticed, only two penholders, and soon maybe none if Boll wins, Zhang Jike does very well against Ma Lin. Boll has never played Xu Xin, but you know Xu Xin has trained against "Boll" clones.

Also sad, no Wang Hao, Samsanov, Mizutani, Maze, etc.

I think with a bit of luck Dima makes a chance versus Ma Long.
Would there be a Ovtcharov clone in China?

Well Dima did well the first time, took him to 7 games. The second though it was more one sided. 2-11,11-7,2-11,4-11,8-11. Losing 11-2, 11-2 and 11-4 is pretty bad...
If they didn't have one the first time, they may now since he is getting better.

Is there a reason there are so many Germans (nothing against them)? But would have loved to see Samsonov, Jun, Maze and Schlager. Would be nice to see Liqin make it to the final, he seems to be struggling a bit recently.

Well some got in because they were on the verge points wise in the pro tour and other players who were ahead of them, Samsanov, Jun, etc. dropped out. Schlager just didn't have many points, he only played in a couple pro tour events and both times got knocked out by Patrick Baum, who is consequently there.

I hate how ittf posts matches in a way so that if you don't watch it right away when a match is first played...you know the outcome e.g. they post the quaterfinal matches - and then right next to them they post the semi final matches.. =(

+1 Except Ma Long wins 4-2.

Xu Xin is playing some amazing TT. His FH is just unbelievable fast. He ripped through Timo. Ma Long just seems to have very well rounded game and his BH is improving fast. (As a modern defender myself I would love to see Joo make it-but Ma is just too fast for him)

Here's my 2 cents... :D

I don't think Hao Shuai would win against WLQ, as given their styles of play, WLQ would just overwhelm Hao Shuai with his power in his BH and FH. It would probably be Xu Xin vs WLQ for the semifinals, and I'll bet on WLQ, since he would already be used to Xu Xin's serves, and WLQ is really experienced in playing penholders.

Joo See Hyuk is the real dark horse here. Zhang Jike and Ma Long are not that good at playing choppers.

If Joo wins against Ma Long and ZJK then WLQ would win. Otherwise Ma Long wins the tournament.

I'll bet that Ma Long would win the whole competition.

The commentator is a tool. Ma Long doesn't disguise his backhand, he just uses his left hand for power/balance.

Off Topic.

Just noticed that Zhang Yining just dropped to #2 in women world ranking (January, 2010).  Her "Ranking" points declined quite a bit.

I have not seen her playing on the world stage for quite some time (marriage).

Has she played any major event recently (I may have missed)?

I dunno, some of it is interesting. I never noticed myself the way Ma Long disguises his backhand with his left hand and what that does.

The commentator is a tool. Ma Long doesn't disguise his backhand, he just uses his left hand for power/balance.

did you actually mean "tool" or "fool?"

forgive me for being an american, but i just can't stand to listen to snoody, snobby, snotty, phlegmy-voiced brits.  and the fact that there are sometimes 2 of them there doing the commentary is just sickening to me, figuratively and literally.

so, somebody, please get a box a kleenex and send those 2 blokes away to the washroom!!  actually, make it 2 boxes...

Nope, she hasn't played in 10 months, but she will be back on top with Liu's loss in the first round. Only 2 points seperated the 2 on ITTF, there is a gap of over 100 between her and the 2nd place on Rating Central...

To be honest though, your ranking points should decrease slowly if you don't maintain titles. Basically, I think that's the idea behind bonus points for winning titles, since if you keep winning them, you should get to keep those bonus points.

Haha, well, he can be entertaining at times, however I absolutely hate when he's talking about Zhang Jike and speed glue creeping out of the bat when it's simply a white and black colored blade guard on the side. He should get with the times. Speed glue is so 2008.

Edit: My bad, I should've edited my first post instead of double-posting.

Well I like him, I like that kind of voice, reminds me on tennis commentators on Eurosport, but they need to bring in two of them, and one of the commentators to be some expert in table tennis (for example a top players coach, or former world champion) who really understands the game and could tell us some interesting comments, and not just "ho ho ho, what a point!" .
But I think this commentator is quite good, just need some expert alongside of him :).

I don't think he's obsolete, he may just have a true rival finally, the one that Zhang Jike hasn't been. A Ma Lin to his Wang Liqin, but Ma Long is superior, just like Wang Liqin, he'll prove that.

December, 2009 ----- 12771
January, 2010 ----- 12723

Looks like a player's inactivity will hurt the player's ITTF "Ranking Points".
Is that true?

Wow.. that was one of the best matches I've ever seen the rally in the fifth game is incredible.. WLQ still overpowers XX.
But XX is only what 19 or 20? He still developing.. XX looks like the real deal, his FH improve quite a lot, he is one of the best retriever of the ball away from the table. He and Ma Long will rule TT in the future when Wang Hao is gone..

I think he has been the best english speaking commentator so far. I liked when after a good rally, he said "Ni hao ma! I'm very well, thank you."
But sometimes he says some kinda nonsensical stuff.

"i like matthew syed commentating cause in good points he also goes a bit berserk, and hes a former table tennis player too"

yeah, actually, he wasn't so bad.

also, there was another brit doing the ittf shows a while back.  i believe he was (or still is for all i know) the english nat'l team coach, uh, dan or don parker, i believe.  now, he wasn't so bad either, and since he's a coach, he's not gonna be as clueless as these 2 guys are.

if they just gotta have englishmen doing the commentary, then i'd rather have that coach and/or syed and also, i'd be interested in seeing 1 of those 2 with perhaps des douglas.  it would be interesting to hear the thoughts of someone who was at the top of the game before, comparing how things were before with how they are now.

now, that would make for some interesting commentary--much better than what we got this weekend.

i wouldn't like that at all.  although he's definitely knowledgeable, he just doesn't speak english all that well.  i live in a city where there's a lot of non-native-english-speaking foreigners and i, for one, don't wanna turn on the tv and have to listen to crappy english, even if it's just for an hour or 2.  it's rough enough listening to these native english-speaking, phlegmatic brits!!

in the kong vs waldner match 1999, stellan and don parker paired up to commentate. What i dont like about don parker, is that he says the exact same things, even now, like dan seemiller, always nit picking the technique in a few words like:

"wonderful touch there by kong"
"heavy backspin serve"
"he lifted too much when there wasnt any"

stellan just translated what waldners coach was saying to him, quite fascinating by all accounts.

yeah, but coach parker and seemiller are not pro commentators.  they're what you call "color commentators."

they generally get paired up with pro commentators as to maintain a certain type of "flow," for lack of a better word.

but i've heard parker a few times and he isn't all that bad.  and i remember stellan bengtson and i remember how much i used to hate it.

it's a shame--with the exception of des douglas, most of the great players of yesteryear are not native english speakers.

oh yeah i totally forogt the concept of colour commentators. So in tennis for example you have like an ex player commentating and then he gets piared up with some nut case who knows nothing about tennis but only reads scores and statistics?  is this right example?

yes, and if the pro commentators are good, they end up asking a lot of good questions as a prompt for good answers from the "colors."

they also ask some apparent "stupid" questions, but these questions need to be asked in order to educate all the noobs in the audience.

for example, i watch a lot of tennis.

and, as you know, they also have pros paired with colors.  once, they were talking about the serve and volley game, or the lack thereof at wimbledon nowadays and one of the oldtimers there had the presence of mind to say that the only reason anyone did serve and volley at wimbledon or anywhere else was that the courts were so horrible that so as to avoid losing a point on a bad bounce, you rushed towards the net and took the ball in the air.  but, since then, you've had advances in, say, "court construction," so now, if you have the money, you can make any kind of court you want and make the ball bounce however you want it to.

so, the fact that players nowadays serve and volley less is not entirely due to better rackets, or better players, but also, and more importantly, better courts and, therefore, better bounces.
