I'm pretty sure getting a coach will be helpful to anyone, but I want to go about it the right way. First of all I am almost 20 years old, have been playing for a year, and am working towards being an aggressive looper with both FH and BH. I currently go to school in Alabama but live in Houston Texas during the Summer. My USATT rating is 1346 but I have been adjusted the last two tournaments I've played in, and I think I might be a little higher now.

I would like to take lessons here but the only coaches are in Birmingham, about 45 minutes away which isn't a big deal. I can take from Homer Brown or Duke Stogner. I want to learn proper stroke mechanics and good footwork. I don't know much about Duke except he is about USATT 1700. Homer is about USATT 2000. I know Homer is a great guy and loves table tennis, even opening up the first table tennis store in the United States, bumpernets . He has been around the game a long time and I'm sure he knows his stuff, but when I have seen him play his form is pretty unorthodox. Has anyone here taken lessons from these guys or know of another place to take from in Alabama? Do you think these lessons will help me even coming from an unorthodox player?

When I am in Houston it is a different story. I will be able to take lessons from Huijing Wang who teaches at my club. She is the #2 US woman right behind Gao Jun and is USATT 2600. She teaches at my club there so it would be convenient, but I think there would be a language barrier since she speaks almost solely Chinese. Another option in Houston would be taking from Sumi Lee who is also in the top 25 US women. She is a chopper but speaks good English and she lives in my neighborhood. I'm sure even though she is defensive she would help me a lot. There may also be other options in Houston.

What do you suggest I do when I am back in Houston? What should I do about lessons in Alabama? Thanks in advance.

huijing wang would be a good choice. the higher the rating of a coach/player the better things he/she can teach you

I don't think you should get coaching from anyone under 1800. Heck, you might have a shot beating the 1700 guy on a good day. There are people around 2000 or even over who have weird form and strokes, but I don't think that works for most people, especially for young players learning the game like you. So it looks like neither coach is good in Alabama...

I wouldn't worry so much about Homer's style of play.  It is what he teaches that matters. You could give one of the coaches a try to see what is taught.  If some good adjustments are made, great, if it seems the guys doesn't know what he is doing, back out.

Back in Houston you might consider Perry Schwartzberg.  He came down to Corpus Christi and put on a pretty good 2 day clinic.  One of our club members takes lessons from Perry when he goes up to Houston to visit his father and seems to like him as a coach.  Our member was rated 1676 but in his last tournament he beat a couple of 1800+ guys so the lessons must be working.  I think Perry played on some national teams with Danny Seemiller and also did some coaching at the Olympic training center.  I am sure someone at the Houston Table Tennis Club can give you some more info on him.

Good luck.

You can take to yourselves the trainer for money, in it if there is at you a necessity. In any sports hall. I wish you successes!
