Cocorico ! Vive la France !
Incredible, unbelievable, never seen before ! Ma Lin loosing first round of a pro tour, can't remember...Robinot was still junior few weeks ago. 2010 junior european champ and runner up this year against another...french junior 1st year, Tristan Flore.
There must have been an upset or something, I can't see how Ma Lin could have lost on a regular basis. If not, it's the performance of the year, no doubt !

Actually Ma Lin lost in the first round of the Austrian Open a few Weeks ago against ~120 wr Livenstov from Russia.
Still a very impressive upset nonetheless!

I think it's obvious by now that Ma Lin is very, very close to retirement now. Judging by WLQ's lack of international appearances, his days are numbered too

Didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
Actually that happened on Harmony China Open in front of the home crowd...
it's Liventsov, not Livenstov but that's splitting hairs I guess...

I stand corrected, you're right!
Ma Lin played fairly well in the Chinese League and events beforehand. It's a bit strange with the drop off. He was playing through injuries near the end of the league season I believe.

Niwa Koki beat the last hope of Swedes - Jens Lundquist, 4-3. And Quentin Robinot (victor over Ma Lin) lost to Yang Zi in the 7th...
From Europe only Skachkov and Gauzy remain among Top 16... and unfortunately they will now play each other, and then the victor will face Ma Long... and we all know how that is going to end.

I have not heard this female player before until now - Yang Yang (CHN).
She won the qualification group, won the Round 64, then in Round 32 she beat the highly ranked player Tie Yana of Hong Kong (ITTF: #11, Ratings Central: #18).
Rating's Central does not have the record of Yang Yang.
ITTF only has her record when she was playing as a junior (under 21) in 2008.
Yang Yang just came out of nowhere and beat Tie Yana.
========================================
itTV has her match when she played in the qualification group.
Her defense and offense both look good, fun to watch this new player.

looking at wlq winning 2-0 for the moment against zjk, it is obvious that it is soon to retire wlq.
last wlq appearances were the wttc probably giving one of the hardest matches to zjk and the china open just losing in sf to ma long.
i think jun mizutani is closer to retire according to his 0 chances to win top chinese players.

Simon's consistency, control and placement are remarkeable.
The WLQ/KM match was bleah; in spite of Kenji's footwork and WLQ's FH, that match reminds me that there is something wrong with the Aluminum bats in Major League Baseball; wait, I mean the current arms race of equipment rules that allow a lot of speed without the control of something like speed glue. Too many unforced errors against topspin balls.
Posted By: blahness
Date Posted: 10/23/2011 at 7:36am
crap, Wang Hao was real lucky in the sixth set, was up against 3 match points. WLQ really shouldn't have gave him all those flicks where Wang Hao can counter with lots of pace and spin. Wang Hao's winning most of the fast close-to-table topspin-to-topspin rallies, whereas he is a little bit less deadly against slow junk or underspin balls, especially those in the middle.

Ma Long didn't lose a single game in his last 6 matches at the Swedish Open and I don't think (without being sure) that he played in the round of the 128 (which is something like preliminary round?) according to this information: http://www.ittf.com/competitions/test/matches_per_round1.asp?competition_ID=2086&rnd=64&s_Event_Type=MS - http://www.ittf.com/competitions/test/matches_per_round1.asp?competition_ID=2086&rnd=64&s_Event_Type=MS
Against Skatchkov he faced 7 game points (if I'm not mistaken) in the last game, but he won the game and the whole match at the end...

"Ma Long didn't lose a single game in his last 6 matches at the Swedish Open and I don't think (without being sure) that he played in the round of the 128 (which is something like preliminary round?) "
===========================================
The main draw has only 64 players. There is no Round 128.
Prior to the round 64. there was a "qualification group" competition - Ma Long was seeded #2, and did not need to go thru qualification.
Again, Ma Long did not lose a single game in this Swedish Open.

Thank you for the clarification my friend!
That, "unfortunately", is already not a unique feat - Ovtcharov did the same at this year Chile Open. However, one cannot really compare the level of Swedish Open to that of Chile Open where Dima was the top seed.

Ma Long in a class of his own in Stockholm: Not One Game Surrendered In 1997
at the World Championships in Manchester, Jan-Ove Waldner won the Men’s
Singles title without the loss of a single game; in 2011 in Stockholm,
Ma Long emulated the legendary Swede.
He breathed in the Nordic air that had also filled the lungs of Jan-Ove Waldner and won without the loss of a single game.
Outstanding Performance A
tournament which included every Men’s Singles World champion since 2005
and the reigning Olympic champion, Ma Long gave a stunning performance,
one to be remembered.
