I have just faced with a surprising (for me) question in the hungarian technical minimum test for coache/referees:

During serving both player & the ball is over the side-line. Could the serve meet the regulations?

  • a. It is a faulty serve because the player's body is over the side-line
  • b. It is a good serve if the ball is behind the end-line and above the level of table's surface
  • c. It is a faulty serve because the ball is over the side-line

The correct answer is "B". There is no any determination layed down in the regulation about the side-line during serving only the end-line. It surprised me. Both of the serves meet the reqirements:

Yep, B
The ITTF book says just has to be behind the end line.

I've never seen a player serving through the side-line.. Maybe it is just because of lacking time??? can it simply decrease chance to reach 3rd ball?

I've seen it a couple of times.
Usually just impatience, however sometimes to get angles.
