    Posted: 06/17/2012 at 3:04am
Does anyone know the correct pronunciation, or, how do you pronounce it? At our club people are pronouncing it in 3 different ways:
'Zeeom'
'Zyom'
'Exiom'
I use the first.
What about other manufacturers? I have heard Joola Pronounced as 'Yoola,' I always use the J.

The word Xiom came from word "AXIOM":
Axiom: An axiom is a statement or idea which people accept as being true. FORMAL N-COUNT oft N that principle ...the long-held axiom that education leads to higher income. National Public Radio
And Xiom came from the rubber made by Champion on or around 2001, a German high tension rubber made by Korean sports equipment company "Champion" the full name was Xiom40. Then Champion decided to use this rubber's name into a tabletennis equipment division "XIOM"
I hope this helped a little.

Joola, some start with a Y and some do with a J.  The former one is supposedly official.

Stiga is pronounced with a long i like stee-gah

We always pronounce it "Zi-ahm", out here in Utah, but maybe that's just cause we live in a "Mormon Zion" Wink

Also, we say "Yoh-la", as above.  A friend works for Joola USA and that's how he says it, so I've always thought it was the correct pronunciation.

I pronounce it Zy-om. Think of how you pronounce xylophone or xenophobia. I realize that Koreans do not follow the same rules as English speakers so that may not be the correct pronunciation but it's correct when following English rules and is in my opinion phonetically more pleasing.

Same with Joola. It's a German company so they pronounce the J as a Y but based off of English rules I pronounce it with an English J.

However when you have a name like Jorgen Persson for example, I pronounce it correctly (Yorgen) because that's the way I have heard it pronounced so many times watching videos of him play.

Most english speaking people pronounce "X" as "eks" when by itself, and as "zha" or "zsha" when using it at the beginning of a word. In Asia, Xi is often pronounced as "she" so you could also pronounce it that way. "O" is the last vowel so it will be pronounced as "um" with the "M." I believe XIOM's correct pronunciation can be either "Zshaam,"Zhaium," or "She-um."

While well intentioned and my reasoning here being sound, it's interesting to see how naive I was 9 years ago with this comment. It's pronounced ex-ee-om like many have said already. Personal preferences be damned, a fact is a fact.

Don't worry about it. Here's a youtuber from Taiwan pronouncing it "wrong" and getting corrected in the comment section in 2020.
