This is a gentleman of the sport and a legend. Lots of amazing memories of Vlad playing.

Did he get injured? Retiring after his last match at the OG was making a lot of sense.

Supposedly this was down to a press release from the Belarusian sports federation. Samsonov says he has only retired from international competition but will carry on playing for his club.

does it mean he chooses not to play the OG men's singles even if he can to let the place to a younger person like Drinkhall? something doesn't add up. It's a man's dream and if his spot does not go to a Belarussian player, what's the motivation not to play?

From Table Tennis Kingdom's report in my previous post:

Quote 『私は選手として、常に勝利を求め、どんな対戦相手とも良い戦いをすることを考えてきました。 残念ながら、肩の問題によ£て、数ヶ月もの間、練習、トレーニングをしない状態では東京五輪への参加はできません』と本人のコメント。

"As a player, I've always sought victory and thought about fighting well with any opponent. Unfortunately, due to shoulder problems, I cannot participate in the Tokyo Olympics without practicing and training for several months, " commented Samsonov.

injury? aaargh!!!
It's a very commendable move to withdraw knowing he won't give his best. Many would hope things will get better by then and stay on, loading cortisone shots for the event, but not him, he knows better. If one thought he could not get higher in people's esteem, here is another step up.

Not being embarrassed by getting annihilated because he's hurt is one thing that comes to mind.  I totally get it.
