Good day to you MyTTers.
I am a 1700-1800 shakehand player, haven't been to any tournaments since last year so I'm a little underrated but I regularly beat 1700-1800 players at round robins and can However, as good as my forehand is, I'm somewhat of a gimp on my backhand side. I previously used Sriver L (speed glued when it wasn't illegal) and performed quite well with it using it primarily for short push, deep push, flip, block, and even punch block spinny loops. Away from the table I would only use it to block and drive. (Not much of a looper from BH side but will if I want to open the rally and can't or won't move around to use forehand). However, after the speed glue ban, I started swinging a little bit harder and focused more on footwork with my FH so it was okay, but my backhand is still gimpy. Lately I've been using Bryce FX at a suggestion from a 2300 player at my club. Away from the table I enjoy it, but its hard to control short game and low throw angle block really cost me a lot of points. Far from the table I'm pretty satisfied with the Bryce FX, but to be frank, I suck sh*t with it close to the table. What I am looking for may not exist in a rubber but I am asking the wise MyTT for some help. I need a BH rubber that has faster speed than Sriver, but slower than Bryce. Slightly more tacky and spinnier than Sriver. Medium throw angle (considering Bryce FX is low as hell). Good push, good flip, and good block is most important. If it's faster than Sriver than that's good enough for me off the table. Non-European rubber because as a college student I can't afford to have an outstanding European rubber that breaks down too quickly. Would probably want to avoid Nittaku because their tackiness disappears wayyyy too quickly (Hammond Pro Alpha was wonderful when I got it, then changed in less than 3 weeks to a slippery purely mechanical rubber). Some player suggested maybe Butterfly's Catapult or Cermet but I'm not too sure about its short game. I may probably go back to Sriver L or Sriver EL as my BH rubber but if there's an offhand chance there's something better out there, PLEASE suggest it to me! |

Hey Jkillashark!
Sounds like what you want is Donic Desto Series: Although it's a European Rubber and not cheap, it's playing properties is exactly what you're looking for. And it doesn't die fast like Nittaku. Desto: F1, F2, F3 respectively like Sriver (L, EL, FX) F1 is the hardest and F3 is the softest. I was recommended these rubbers by some provincial players in Guangzhou and I picked up the rubber and loved it immediately! (Thanks boz for helping me find a decent price in HK) It plays fast like sriver glued, but with a nice grip that bryce series doesn't have. I'm able to play well close to the table as well as far from the table. I'll probably start carrying these rubbers since I love them so much! I currently use Desto F-3 unglued (they don't need glue, but I'm sure they'd be even faster with speed glue) |

Eghhhh I think the short game on those bad boys is a little too whack for what I'm looking for. Less looping, more cut, flip, block, and drive.
Priority: Short game then block then off the table. |

That's sounds like my BH. Push/flip/drop, then block and then drive or loop.
Really, give it a try =) Luckily for me, the coaches let me try one of their setups before I bought my own. |

Sriver L glued is quite unique.. my favorite rubber before the glue ban, it performs so well.. I haven't found anything that has the feeling close to it.
I use Tenergy 05 these days and have adjusted my game to it, but it's nowhere near the feeling of Sriver L glued.. |

Word, man. Word.
I could push short, push long, flip short, flip long, block, PUNCH block (favorite), drive back, and occasionally loop. The only problem is without glue it kinda sucks away from the table. |

How about Sriver G3 FX? Should be slower in short game than Speed FX.

Don't discount Outlaw just cause it is cheap and Chinese. There is a huge thread over at OOAK and it sounds like it could work for your BH-- but there have been some discussion on durability if you are highly ranked and hit hard. But if you must spend the $, Ten 64 maybe is the way to go.

Somebody suggested Catapult at my church's open table tennis. He said it has good cut, block, and faster than Sriver. What are your guys' thoughts on Catapult?

I Played Donic JO Platinum and it was one of the spinnies non chinese rubbers i had ever tried. NOTE: Never tried tenergy. I had donic on my backhand. I also consider bryce's throw angle low (who doesnt right?). Lets look at it like this. I like to think that
Low throw = bryce Medium throw = Sriver High throw = Hurricane 3 I use these 3 because many people have felt them and know at least a little what im talking about. Anyway, back to JO Platin. The throw is medium +/-. It does have a speed glue feel to it, and the speed is also pretty good. And it is really grippy too, spinniest german rubber i have ever tried. I plays very well close to the table, and by close i mean like 1-1.5 meters behind the edge of the table. Blocking is excellent, and looping against backspin is also not bad. If you want something with easier control and easier to loop backspin, try a softer rubber. There is a JO Platin soft, but never tried it. Also, it is faster than bryce, but i dont get why you couldnt control bryce FX, especially unglued. Bryce's control on blocks are supposed to be pretty good. But the Platin is faster than bryce unglued, most new generation rubbers are. |

Go with Gambler Outlaw/Wraith ($14) or Reactor Thunder ($12)
If you want it tacky (mild) then skip Outlaw. Frankly, I would go with Thunder 2.2 - melarimsa sells it here at $12 (or perhaps prices have gone up a bit... I dunno). It is just a tad faster than Sriver, doesn't need speed glue, cheap, decently resilient, no gimmicks reliable rubber. I played with it a bit, now my son plays with it, been three months now - it still has the original mild tackiness. |

I'd go with boost tx, medium throw, perfect for blocking, punching, doesn't loop perfectly but still possible, very good for pushes because the rubber isn't bouncy, pretty fast (some compared it to t05 but I'm still not sure), spinnier than tc. Very durable, lightweight. But the price is high, and the speed-glue effect is not very noticeable.

Hmmm Tenergy seems a little intimidating to me in terms of speed, I only want it faster than Sriver, not faster than Bryce. tdragon is right when i think it would kill me. Catapult seems the most likely replacement as my next BH rubber, hopefully being the last. Can you guys give me your thoughts on this rubber?
