This topic is about STRAIGHT handles ONLY.

What is the best/worst straight handle you played with?
I have large hands and I like handles of appropriate size, sort of squarish.
An ideal handle I found so far is Timo Boll Spirit ST (or Michael Maze ST - both very similar).

The worst - Tibhar Samsonov Alpha ST - so thin and round that it felt like a broomstick.

Although I like TBS handle better, honorary mention award goes to Stiga Clipper (or Stiga Peter in general).

I too have large hands so finding a good handle is often a challenge. My Rutis was way too thin. My current blade (Xiom Fuga) is so far the best I've ever encountered. Large and kinda squarish, as you mention.

Old Hking ST, Mizutani ST, Acoustic/Violin L-sized ST are very comfortable to hold, especially if you have big hands. Mizutani ST is the smallest among them but it's squarish and comfortable to grip. While Stiga Peter handle is too thin IMO, a bit thicker will be comfortable to hold.

YEO has a good ST handle, but I wish a handle even bigger. Most of the handles I saw are thin for my taste, sometimes I have problems when I switch from fh to bh, the fingers get into my palm.

Butterfly squarish handle like Primorac OFF-. I think the TBS and Timo Boll series has this type handle, not oval and not too thin. These are my favorite type handles in ST. Many Yasaka ST blades are similar in construction but not quite as good.

Speaking of broomstick handles, does anyone remember the old Butterfly Power Smash blade? I had one in the 80's. Same as the classic power drive but with a rounded straight handle that screamed BROOMSTICK!  I'd like to get my hands on one of those just to look at and wonder what was I thinking back then...
I like the straight handle on my Yasaka Gatien Carbon.

BEST:

1) Photino ST- its hard to go from any FL blade to the Photino ST, but if you already use a ST and go to Photino, no other handle will suffice. 2) HK ST- looks like a photino ST handle. 3) Tenor ST- Like the HK ST, I haven't tried the Tenor ST, but it looks like a good one.

GOOD:

New TB series, TBS, MJ, M.Maze... Squarish ST handles kick ass.

HONORABLE MENTION: Yasaka make some decent ST handles. I really like the Hinoki Leo 7. And there are a lot of older BTY blades that have great ST handles... (They don't always make them like they used to...) Chuan Chih-Yuan is a very nice ST handle, Gergely 21, Schlager Carbon, etc.

BAD:

I don't like Stiga ST handles. They are flat and the wings come down too far so the handles always feel short. Matsuhita Pro ST. nothing worse than a defensive blade with a short handle.

UGLY:

I haven't tried the Iolite ST, but I can say that Rutis ST is like holding a pencil in your hand.

It is interesting how best handle for one can be on the least comfortable list for somebody else.
peter79 - what is the Stiga Peter handle that you found too thin?
Could you post measurements of yours: width, height and diagonal?

All Stiga Peter handles that I measured (OC, OC CR, Clipper, All Classic) are pretty thick: X 29mm, Y 23mm, Diag 29mm. I rarely find blades with thicker handles than that.

I actually found that the handle feels comfy to me when diagonal is slightly more than the width - even having smaller volume of the handle.

Measurements taken from some of my ST handles:
Stiga Peter (Clipper, OC, etc.) X 29mm, Y 23mm, Diag 29mm (oval-squarish)
TBS: X 27mm, Y 22mm, Diag 29mm (squarish)
Donic Baum: X 29mm, Y 23mm, Diag 27mm (oval)
Korbel: X 27mm, Y 22mm, Diag 28mm (oval-squarish)

Great thread!  I've spent days on the web trying to find this sort of information regarding ST handle dimensions.  I have large hands too and don't want to buy a ST handle blade through mail-order only to find that the handle is not big enough.

7plywood, do you have the measurements for the Samsonov Alpha ST handle that you mentioned in your first post?  I've always thought the Samsonov Alpha ST should have a good size handle based on web pictures of the blade.  Does anyone know if the dimensions are the same for all Tibhar ST handles?

Last year I compared the ST handles on a Stiga Kevlar Wood and a Yasaka Extra:

Kevlar Wood: 29 x 23 mm (same as what 7plywood reported)
Yasaka Extra: 28.5mm x 22.5mm

Even though the YE was smaller X-Y dimensions, it had a circumference that was about 2mm bigger than the Kevlar Wood because of the squarish shape of the YE handle.  I measured the circumference with one of those flexible fabric-type tape measures.  Since then I've sold the YE so I can't get the diagonal measurement that 7plywood has measured.

The HH Table Tennis website (cafe.daum.net/hhtabletennis) has ST handle dimensions in some of their reviews.  Only problem is most of the reviews are in Korean and google translator doesn't work on them.   However if you scan through the review, you'll find an area in each review that has the characters FL, AN, and ST with dimensions in mm.  They also usually have a picture of the end of the handle, so we could calculate the diagonal dimension as well.  When I get a chance I will attempt to compile some of these and post them to this thread.

The best ST handle I have used so far is the one of the Michael Maze Off. Square and thick.

The worst (by far) is the Stiga Clipper "Peter". Too flat, too wide and the wings come down too far, so the handle feels short, and narrower at the bottom. I wasn't comfortable at all playing with it, as it felt like I would loose it any time. Also the low wings really hurts. I tried sanding it, but still it is way too flat and wide.

All BTY handles are individual, so they vary between different blades.
I've never had Schlager Carbon ST in my hand, but from some pictures I've seen it looks more like Gergely 21 ST handle or Stiga Clipper. I don't know dimensions though.

Unlike BTY, Stiga Peter handles (Stiga name for their ST handle) seem to be the same between different models. Also for Donic it seems to be true for their Senso blades.

In my opinion schlager carbon st is better balanced than fl but it usually gets more heavy weight. It is good handle st in sc. more or less the same as in maze and squarish (maybe not so thick as in maze). better st handle in sc than in clipper.

i do not like present peter stiga handle at all.

when one gets a thick one yasaka squarish st is quite good.

That is my opinion. I like this thick cubish chunk of Michael Maze OFF the most. I don't like Stiga handles (Legend, Peter, etc.), they are rough, unfinished, uncomfortable. And the Donic handles i've played so far i didn't like too (e.g. Waldner Senso). Second to the Michael Maze OFF handle i like Tibhar handles, like the one of Alpha, and the big one of IV-L.

Donic Persson series ST handles are comfortable. They are oval in cross section. Width is good but a bit thin.

The Waldner series ST handles have the same width but are a bit thicker.

The wings on the Waldner ad Persson blades I've tried are a bit too wide from the bottom of the thumb bevel to the top of the handle. This can make it uncomfortable to hold and give the feeling that the handle is too short.

Best ST handle I every had: Yasaka Dynamix 17.  It is sligtly bigger than most ST handles.  I do not have big hands, but the handle feels just right.

Worst: Samsonov Alpha.  Not a good blade by any means, imo.

I have two Samsonov Alphas with ST handles.  We must have different size hands.  I like the longer handle. It definitely is NOT head heavy even with heavy rubbers.  My only complaint is that the paddle shape is shorter and wider than other paddles so it is hard to transfer rubbers to the Samsonov Alpha.

Edit, I left out the NOT

I don't have any special issues with the handle of Violin. Actually, I must say that among the ST handles I tried it's quite OK, although I prefer less rounded edges, especially on thin handles. Among the ST handles I played with, here is my personal ranking (from best to worst):
Butterfly M. Maze
TSP Hinoki Pure
OSP Virtuoso STSQ
Butterfly Spark
Nittaku Violin/Acoustic
Nexy Lissom
Butterfy Chuan Chih-Yuan
Butterfly Kiso Hinoki V
Yinhe Stock (shape ok but jagged lens)

I measured the ST handles of the blades I have now.

Butterfly Timo Boll Spark
A: 27.1 mm
B: 21.6 mm
C: 27.7 mm (?)

Nittaku Violin
A: 27.3 mm
B: 23.1 mm
C: 25.4 mm (?)

Nittaku Acoustic
A: 27.5 mm
B: 23.2 mm
C: 25.5 mm (?)

Nexy Lissom
A: 28.6 mm
B: 21.6 mm
C: 29.2 mm (?)

The tolerance of the blade manufacturing process is less than that of the instrument I used for measuring (the handles have slightly different cross sections at different places), so I would guess that the error on the measures is about +/- 0.2mm for A and B. Determining C requires some guesswork, especially if the cross section is more elliptic than square. Therefore, I suggest to include a picture of the handle butts.

(I could't convince my phone camera not to focus on the background, but I'll try again).

EDIT: added dimensions of Spark.

Petr Korbel SK7 ST is very comfortable handle. The normal Korbel OFF is with very short handles. Timo Boll Spirit also is very good in ST variant. Everything depends from the sizes of your hand.
The topic will be more useful if the member who post make an appropriate comparison between his hand and the hanlde of the blade.

Hands have many more sizes than handles.

I think measuring the size of the handles will be more useful. So if one plays with one blade and feels that he would prefer a handle which is larger, thinner, thicker, wider, rounder, etc., he/she can immediately know which blades to look for.

If we get enough entries in this thread I may make a database.
Once more, pictures of the handle butts, along with dimensions, would be extremely helpful.

Does anyone have the dimensions (measurements A and B as mentioned previously in this thread) for the straight handle on newer Joola blades? I'm specifically looking at the Joola Flame Fast blade, but dimensions from any modern straight-handled Joola would be helpful.

Just wondering how the Joola straight handle compares to the Stiga Peter straight handle.

Thanks!

Large hands I think German brands are best: 2 I like are - Andro JM Saieve (sp?) and Joola Chen Wei Xing - both have very large comfortable ST handles.

Thanks for the info jrs. Do you know if Joola handles are a consistent size and design from one model to the next, or are they a different size and design for each model (like Butterfly handles)?

From the little I've seen, any blade with WSI as part of it's design has the same style handles. All the other blades may vary as I have a Torre that is a bit different from my WSI blades.

Sorry stiga21 - not sure - Joola Chen Wei Xing is a chopper blade - so it is an oversize blade. Might want to check the paddlepalace website. I think they give handle sizes there.

Stiga OC
X = 29 mm
Y = 21 mm
Diagonal = 27 mm

Compare these to those given on the first page of this thread. All made possible by poor quality control.

Stiga should be ashamed to put "Made in Sweden" on their classics.

Frogger,

How long ago did you buy the blade? I'm wondering if the current version still has those dimensions. Thanks.

I bought the blade 12 years ago. Love the handle but the blade is to slow for me.

Nittaku Runlox 5 (in the middle) compared to Stiga Clipper and TBS.

ST handle of Runlox 5: A 29mm, B 23mm, C (diagonal) 29mm (oval-squarish)

Exactly the same as Stiga Clipper ST handle (both shape and measurements).
Runlox 5 is a Nittaku version of Avalox P500 blade. Over 6 mm thick, soft and quite stiff (yes, contrary to what some other people say it is rather stiff for a 5 ply, much different than Stiga OC), it is great looping blade with excellent control.

I like Hallmark's straight blades with the strip of cork down each side. Nice and comfortable size, plus the cork gives some extra grip and sweat absorption.

Could you guys tell me about Tibhar ST handles? There was mention of the Samsonov alpha being too thin and uncomfortable.

I am particularly interested in the Tibhar Stratus Powerwood ST handle.

The only Tibhar blade I held in my hand was the COS3 Def which has a large and long ST handle but that is a defensive one and oversize.

Thanks for any input.

The Force Pro ST handle is thin but I am getting used to it. The Force Pro flare is my favorite flare/conical handle. Haven't tried Stratus Powerwood but I hear it has a large head so one should definitely try the blade before buying if one dislikes thin handles absolutely. The force pro st handle mostly disappoints because of the high expectations from the Flare handle.

Have not tried a ST handle from Tibhar, but the FL on the SPW is the most comfortable handle I have ever held.

I actually find SPW ST handle one of the most comfortable ST handles I've been experienced so far. If you hate tiny Korbel FL handle, you'll love SPW ST - thick, wide and long. And I'm STraightholder, neither FL nor AN.

Yes, I fix mine by rubber cementing a rubber grip to my straight handles.
I originally bought straight handles to go into a vise I use for testing but now I am use to them and prefer round handles.  I really like the round handles on my Firewall Plus blades.  They are good for twiddling.

It's fairly easy to change the shape of a straight handle.  I simply use epoxy to increase the handle size and length, and reshape it with a sander to the way I like it:

Wider handle - Stiga Clipper CR
Rounder handle - Donic Waldner Senso Carbon or Ovtcharov Senso Carbon

These blades feel comfortable, but as always everyone has their own unique preferences :)

Thank you everybody for the input. It has helped me narrow down my search to two blades which is the Stiga Clipper ST and the Tibhar SPW ST. I am more inclined to get the latter one because it is thinner and I hope to get a better feel with it. But at the same time I am trying out a friend's Clipper next week to see how it fits me.

Best: OSP Immune OX--You get what you pay for.

Honourable mention: Stiga AR Classic/Off Classic

Worst: TB ALC--Sometimes you don't get what you pay for! (Too small, square and...wierd.  Great Blade though.)

As with other treads there is no good or bad. It's what feels best to the player. Player A may love it while player B thinks it's uncomfortable. Best advice is to find the blade you are interested in hold it and play with it.

I never have a problem with uncomfortable handles.  LOL  Here's an extreme example of what you can do to reshape the handle with epoxy (Don't laugh...anyone who held this paddle commented how awesome it felt in their hand!):

Here is my Xiom Zetro Quad ST. More of an oval shape and based on measurements others posted, pretty good size. At least wider than most. I find it comfortable having average sized hands. It is also the only ST handle I have ever held, so don't have much to compare to.

Measurements

A: 29.5mm
B: 21.5mm
C: ~28.5mm ?

This is my first good setup involving the BTY PETR KORBEL FL (made in Jap)
So disappointed with the size and length of the blade handle, so smal, so small, seems like it was made for a child.
I have small-average hands.

my most favorite handle is on this 729 premade bat my dad bought me 15 years ago. My first blade. Round ST, which seemed to have disappeared over the years. Has this laquer/varnish finish. Would never slip out of my hand or neither give me blisters. Haven't found anything even close to it.
I still have the blade for memories :D

The new handle is a Butterfly Korpa replica.

I have a lot of galaxy blades like that.  Remember, most blades are only stained anyway.  You really dont want a poly or similar coating around the wood of the handle, I'm told.  You want the wood to breathe.

I have zero problems with Lq1, for example.

I bet that think plays sweet.  I still like the appelgren, but it seems the newer head is smaller.

personally i think most of the butterfly STs are pretty good, the IF ZLC is a little different in that it is thinner and more rounded.  consistent high quality qc and finish.

years ago, i started playing yasaka, stiga and donic blades.  i found the finish on the yasaka 40 blade to be a little rougher (porous?) thereby leaving blisters.  i found the stiga blades (offensive, caliber, energy wrb, super carbon) to be similar, but some of the handles were more porous/unfinished and some had a smoother final product.  the donic's i tried (glass fibre, waldner senso with v1 (small hole hollow handle), a persson power speed 7 ply - the straight handles on those were very thin, and to me, very maneuverable.  i later tried a carbotec which had a larger/squarer handle.    the donic's were consistently smoother final product i felt the fit and finish and final qc on the donics were higher quality than the stiga/yasakas.

:)
