Rating estimation experts.. I have a good one for you. This player (Miguel Fernandes) is a portuguese player who is currently in Orlando/Florida. He just played a tournament in the US and I have a pretty good idea on what his rating will be based on his results at that tournament. (I actually got to play him at the tournament).. so, we will find out how high he actually will be rated once the tournament will be processed this Thursday...
Let's see who can come the closest... It is the player on the right. This is a video from Portugal, not from the US. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbFMH4gaXWA Edited by Pushblocker - 09/23/2014 at 8:58am |

You bring up a good point.. I'm not sure how old that video is but I doubt that it's very old as the date of the upload was only a year ago..
I have to say that he played better at the tournament last weekend than he appears in that video but he didn't look a lot older, so I assume that the match happened about a year ago.. Sure, he is a young player and he could have improved a lot in a year.. Not sure. I don't think that there is a video from the tournament that he played last weekend..

about 2100, both of them will have trouble with 2100 kids in US.
they are too slow to handle close table game with kids. |

OK, his LIKELY initial rating will be somewhere around 2250 - 2270.
He beat two 2300 players (best win was 2333) and his 2 worst losses was a 2259 (who might get adjusted to over 2300) and myself (2142 current rating). I was his worst loss.. If he wouldn't have lost to me, his initial rating would be around 2300. Before awarding points based on his record, his initial rating should be 2237 and he will gain some from there, so he will end up over 2250. Best win 2333, worst loss 2142 results in about 2237 initial rating before applying the matches against that rating... The video might be over a year old.. Not sure.. He did play very well at the tournament.. Edited by Pushblocker - 09/24/2014 at 7:17am |

basically most of us got good estimation already. you
can't get exactly, everyone can easily +/- 100 points from one tournament to
next. So, I'd say +/- 200 are OK..

I personally would say, having played him.. that he plays around high 2100 to mid 2200 level. I don't remember all of his matches but he did play 9 or 10 matches and he beat I believe: 2333, 2321, 2141, 2088, 2078 and lost to 2352, 2306, 2303, 2259 (possibly adjusted to over 2300) and 2142 (me) 9 to 10 matches give you some idea of someone's level... I can guarantee you that he is no sub 2100 player for sure. His level is at least 2150 or up... most likely, his level is somewhere in the low to mid 2200's.. Your style is different, hard to use as a reference. One of my friend play BH LP and FH SP, he got close to 2300. Most kids have hard time to handle him, last tournament he even beat Prachi, but lost to us very often. Can we beat Prachi now?? no way… From the video, what I can see is the guy play style is OK play with adults will have problem play with kids, I’m not sure in Florida but in CA now almost 70% of player are kids in the tournament in 2000-2300 range.. Is hard to guess he is 2300 from video.. |
