What the hell is going on with Persson's rubber here?

(Go to 29m58s incase that link doesn't take you there)

I'm guessing the overhang of the rubber is a side-effect of boosting or speed-glue?

(Also, if you pause it at that moment the ball resting between the bat and the table doesn't look round at all. Camera's fault?)

I'm sorry, a round table? What do you mean by this?

Many pros did not cut their rubber very evenly back when you could still speed glue, so I imagine that Persson did not either. I can only assume that the overhang on his rubbers is from speed gluing, but he may have also cut his rubbers bigger than his racket head.

I just meant that the ball looked strange but I think it might have been something to do with my choice of drink last night rather than a non-round ball being used...

That overhang towards the handle is deliberately cut that way. Because the rubbers were removed so often, many players left that overhang to give them grip when removing the rubber.

I would change the title of this thread to something like "Was rubber overhang allowed back then?"
The present version probably creates lots of false hits...
