I have been thinking to buy one Donic Zhou Yu 3 blade from TT-Japan. I am wondering whether it is just exactly like True carbon except the handle. Anyone has any insights? The good part is that it is cheaper to buy from Japan as USD is stronger at the moment.

I've only seen pictures from TurboZ a member at Table Tennis Daily, but it sure looks similar. And less than $70 at TT-Japan.
He posted this picture which I have shamelessly stolen because it is pretty interesting. Thanks TurboZ!!! What he is showing here is from the side, the True Carbon (colors of German flag), and Donic ZY3, and a Butterfly ZJK-ALC. This weekend I compared one of my ZJK-ALC ST blades to a True Carbon ST. Both with MX-P, and as it happens, both were 87 grams. I would not be able to tell the difference without looking down. And I have a long history with ALC blades, I bought my first Viscaria in 2007 and have been using that blade or a True Carbon ever since. They played exactly the same way. From this picture it looks like both Donic blades have a slightly thinner outer ply. But it makes almost no difference when you compare ZJK-ALC with True Carbon. Making it clear that I have not played with the ZY3, I would bet a great deal that if you like the handle shape and weight distribution (which is very important and you can't know about that from the picture) then you will like the blade, and the price is very good. He posted other pictures too, showing a scaly surface layer some people will like. http://www.tabletennisdaily.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?14344-Possible-DONIC-Timo-Boll-ALC-Timo-Boll-Spirit-Viscaria-Zhang-Jike-ALC-alternatives/page3 |

Another blade that appears to be essentially the same thing is the Tibhar Drinkhall Powerspin Carbon seen here from the side. So the Viscaria will live forever, now under many different names. This one costs about the same as a Viscaria, though. Comes in three handle shapes, and IMHO Tibhar handles have always been really comfortable.

Thanks, Baal.
I actually like the smaller handle of True Carbon than Viscaria. I believe the handle of ZY 3 might be smaller.

By the way, I did some research on scaly wood blade face. The wood was actually cut along the annual ring direction. So it is actually not good to have scaly wood grain as blade top layer, as the wood hardness will be different on the blade face.
I have purchased several scaly Viscaria from Prospin and have tried one. I like the very hard feeling of it.

I have never held a FL true carbon so don't know how it feels compared to a Viscaria. The ST handle is very nice (as is the one on the ZJK-ALC). As for scaly blades, legend has it that they are better, and I will admit that the very best Viscaria that I have ever had has a scaly surface, but as I wrote on some other thread, it is hard to know if it is really better without a lot of blind testing that we don't have.

I am not surprised. It is amazing how legends take hold. |

I had one scaly TBS and it was by far the best from the 6-odd I've had over the years. I had a scaly one recently and it was hard and had a dead feel in comparison. The main difference - the magic one was also an old black tag.

The True Carbon FL handle is definitely skinnier than the normal Viscaria handle. It's not a huge margin but it's noticeable.

Which would suggest that scaly surface is neither a good thing or a bad thing. Which is what I suspect. But it would take a series of equally weighted blades with scaly and non-scaly surfaces, say 8-10 of each, and blind testing from at least three or four players, before I would be convinced one way or the other. And that is never going to happen. |
