It's raining here and everyone's in a dull mood but perhaps this will be fun to ponder. According to this youtuber, who at times can be a bit dramatic, the claim is that Cai Zhenhua pitched an idea that China winning all the time wasn't good to the overall image of table tennis on the world stage. Thus they came up with this concept... The zoom in at the end... lol

Fact. The plan has been in motion since early 2009 after Cai Zhenhua became the president of CTTA. Chinese coaches and players were sent the world over to help "developing table tennis countries." Foreign players were allowed to come train in China. Right before the WTTC of that year, sparring partners were sent over to help Boll, Samsonov and Suss et al. As of 2017, it met with limited success.
Though it has to be stressed that they never intended for Japan to become the REAL wolf. |

How is possible that after years of this project still there no good european player with full arm swing (maybe Kristian Karlsson, I cant rememeber others), great consistency during long looping rallies, and strong footwork?

There may be some like that, but they do not have really good coaches or they do not have a chance to play many strong tournaments.

Cai Zhenhua touched upon that problem in 2011, after China sweeped the gold/silver medals at the WTTC Rotterdam.
"A big part of the problem is that Europeans are resistant to change their way of thinking, from the role of coaches to the concept of training and competition. For problems seen in competitions, they look for reasons merely from the technical aspect, not from a broad perspective. China wants to help them, but they may not get it, which is a difficult problem. Just like a professor instructing an elementary student, it is unreal to produce an honor roll student in an instant." explained Cai Zhenhua. Cai Zhenhua also predicted the potential issues of Chinese table tennis and stressed that the junior CNT does not have any advantage over Japan and South Korea, and is even at a disadvantage, especially for the generations post '92. Interesting.. This is a well selected excerpt, thanks zeio, you have some amazing resources.
Well, Cai Zhenhua seems to be very correct in his opinions about European TT. Some exceptional individual of the Vladi Samsonov's caliber might appear from time to time, but overall it is hard to forecast a bright future for the Europeans in competition against the Chinese or even the Japanese. I must agree that the main culprit is a different mindset. These "wolves" may be more like bears...

x2 He was planing to help south east Asia and European. His idea was to let the CNT (2nd team or so) players play for other counties and make a living. With that, those counties would have some OK tt players. The goal was to make tt relevant again, not to help them developing Miu or so, may be ai fukuhara.

Here is an excerpt from a recent report about Ovtcharov:
"There are many Chinese in Ovtcharov's training squad. He likes to find Chinese sparring partners very much, 'especially those who have entered the CNT.' He admitted the Chinese's understanding of table tennis is far above that of European athletes. Training with them is not merely about technique, but more about the playing consciousness. He's gained a lot from them on tactical thinking. From previous interactions with former CNT players, he has gained a deeper insight of the Chinese training program. He even knows when the coaches from different Chinese provinces would gather for a seminar each year, where ideas are exchanged on talent development. He is also very interested in Chinese equipment, and has attempted to use Chinese rubbers in competitions." Edited by zeio - 05/27/2017 at 1:11am |
