I believe this topic has been covered a fair amount before so I'm not going to argue it all over again.

I used Visual Audio v.1.0.3 (iOS). I don't know if the measurements are compatible with those by the Apps listed at the start of the thread. I used Visual Audio because it is free, identifies peak and averages several bounces. Settings used: aquisition rate 8,000 kHz, Level calibration 140 dB, duration 20s. I averaged 2 runs: each run produces several close peak resonace freqs (e.g. 1125 and 1123) those were averaged prior to averaging two runs.
I have expected TSP Swat to have higher frequency (it is 7ply). Could be getting lower peak due to somewhat light weight that I got. The blade plays very nicely BTW. **Edited Donic-Tibhar mixup

Weight does not affect the frequency much. There are other 7ply blades with low stiffness/speed/frequency, such as Nexy Lissom or Nexy Higgs. So no worries about the correctness of your measures. |

Swat does feel faster than Burn All+ while playing but not by much. This is the only slight inconsistency (expected or observed speed vs frequency) that see in the above blade lineup so far.

thanks, folks, i found this is very interesting. one application is to put blades from other brands on butterfly's infamous "reaction/vibration properties" matrix. i think the vibration properties should be some measure very close to the frequency.
there's a blog (ttgearlab.com) i accidentally found by googling around that proposed some quantitative measurements as well. i think we will get something real in this direction. over the years, i gradually got sick of a lot reviews with all non-quantitative description. it's just like how i describe my dinner last night. i can only get more confused after the reading. thanks for making it right.

I've come across several of both blades, IMO the Swat is considerably faster. fatt: Thanks for posting that picture, I had wondered what a 1-ply would look like |

From what I understood, I tought I was supossed to pick the value from the second peak, but I'm not sure (I think I read this somewhere a few months ago, not sure exactly where...). Maybe h0n1g or Arg0 can help us on this. |

When I record, there's usually two peaks. One ranges around 900 while the other around 9500?? And the blade is supposed to be an allround+ to off- blade according to the person who sold it to me. Am I doing something wrong?
BTW I just followed argo's post on the first page using Audacity EDIT: I tried again with a Koto ALC blade with the same result. Edited by VSDG - 04/01/2018 at 9:28pm |

I have a SoulSpin Roots Offensive 3, all wood 5ply, Spruce+Spruce+Kiri and noticed recently that SoulSpin rated its speed the same Tempo as its ZLC inner Roots 8 which also has Spruce outer. So Last night I did a Frequency test on the all wood Roots 3 with Audacity and was expecting something close to 1500 ish and instead 1781 appeared no matter how many test I did. The blade is stiff even though SoulSpin rates it as soft.

Spruce is bouncy. Also, evaluating spruce / hinoki is a bit tricky as mentioned in posts above. This method gives us good info but it is just 1 piece. It does not give us how powerful the blade catapault would be because of flex. For example: MJ ZLC would probably give a low rating (<1500). But, on large hits, the blade exhibits catapault due to flex that a stiffer blade with a higher rating (like Garaydia ZLC) would not.

please remember while higher pitch usually means stiffer it isnt always the case, take a 11 gauge and 9 gauge guitar string the 11 gauge can be lower pitch and stiffer. While sound test is fun and all there are many variables affecting frequency

I had tested earlier a Roots 6 Basalt which came in at 1475, a spruce+Ayous+kiri but the manufacture rated the Roots 3 offensive 5-ply at 70% tempo and the Basalt at 65% so my expectation was that the Roots 3 would have a slightly higher Frequency but the difference was much larger then I anticipated. The Roots 3 has a very soft feel given it composition but it is thick, 6.5 and stiff. I have ordered a Roots 8 ZLC inner which has a construction closer to the Basalt roots 6 so it will be interesting to see it's frequency relative to the other two SoulSpin blades.

how can you tell if the blade will have solid bounce not hollow based on the frequency chart?

higher frequency = higher stiffness sharper, more defined peak = harder outer ply hinoki is very soft, hence less defined peak, but 1ply is stiff, hence higher frequency. h301 is koto and overall hard, but retains some flex, hence sharp peak and mid frequency. stiffer softer blades feel faster, more bouncy at low to medium impact, but can lack power away from the table. Just look at some balsa composites for example - high frequency and high stiffness. Not sure how accurate this is, but I think we are getting closer.

Amazing that this is so much lower than that of the roots 3. Fairly close to the roots 6. |

Roots 3, 5-ply is stiff similar to a one ply while both the Roots 6 and Roots 8 have more flex that is really what the numbers show. |

It appears as though Stiga Allround Evolution from 13th Feb has been missed. Not sure if just that blade or if its a whole section from around that time.
Keep up the good work, I find it a really useful reference.
