Is just my perception, or before the 40 mm. ball, players used a plain stroke with their drives much more than they do nowadays, when almost every ball hit with the drive is hit with topsin? ( I don't know if the word "plain" is right in English, but I am refering to the kind of stroke you do when you warm up, with just a bit more force) Isn't the plain stroke much more lethal? Why do they prefer the topsin stroke? I can understand that in a low level you may prefer the topsin, because you have more room for mistake with it, but in a higher level, hitting plain with your drive at any position shouldn't be a problem, even without short pips. If my perception is right, which is the technical reason for that change? Oso Moroso |

IMHO due to the larger ball the the topspin trajectory has more loop to it for a given amount of effort even though the number of revs is less. certainly it seems to fall in front of me more than before.-not sure why. However if you look at the pros, THEY have a much greater forward power component to their shots than amateurs do, the chinese especially. Even then of course the spin component is also greater than amateurs.
To answer yr question amateurs spin because they enjoy it. Pros play to win |
