    Posted: 07/13/2012 at 11:54pm
hey guys,

looking for knowledge about good veneer choices for a 3 ply hardbat blade

for the core, I'm considering 2.5mm ayous or 2.5mm poplar

for the outers, I'm considering .9mm walnut, or going with a thicker core so I can use .5mm mahogany outers

my collection is almost entirely 5 ply blades, so I'm new to 3 ply's

i want near maximum flex so i can still loop as much as possible (will be using peacekeeper ox)

the head will be approximately 160mm wide and 170mm tall, and my wood choices will be coming from this list: http://www.tt-piet.de/infos-zu-furnieren.html

thanks for any insight,
theo

I went ahead and made my choice:

3 ply blade

Walnut .9 - Abachi 2.5 - Walnut .9

head size: 160mm wide x 170mm tall

handle: Flared

It was only an additional $25.06 since I've already ordered a 5 ply:

5 ply blade
Limba 0.55 - Limba 0.55 - Abachi 2.5 - Limba 0.55 -  Limba 0.55
head size: 151mm wide x 160mm tall
weight: 80-88grams
handle: Flared

Total for both blades including shipping was $63.89

I wonder how far from the acoustic the 5-ply will feel? both have limba-limba as outer plies.

acoustic = tung tree (Kiri or Paulownia) core --> 0.26 to 0.35
yours = abachi (Obeche or Ayous) core  --> 0.38

Of course the thickness of plies is a major factor but you might end up with an Acoustic sister that fits your needs better.

acoustic... is that that blade by Nittaku? Wink

my goal was to 1) check out Peter's work b/c bluebucket recommends him and 2) make something similar to the Expert but thinner overall
