I did not see Dima use the tomahawk serve even once in the final.
Probably Timo knows how to deal with it. |

One of the best women matches I ever have seen:
PAVLOVICH Viktoria BLR - VACENOVSKA Iveta 3-4 (11-6, 6-11, 5-11, 11-6, 11-4, 10-12, 5-11) It was semifinal women single. |

Dima has improved his forehand receive of serve tremendously. Doesn't always put himself out of position by returning serve with backhand only like he used to do. He also steps around more to attack with his forehand whereas before he would also play a little too much backhand. Timo was not mentally into the match. He looked bored........lol

Ovtcharov deserved the win so much, a tough match against Chuang gave him the self-confidence he needed to face Boll. Winning against Boll when Boll is in very fine form is quite a feat in itself considering Boll is up with the top Chinese in terms of standard.
On technique, I think Ovtcharov improved his BH over-the-table loop (seems to have more control now), and his FH (incredible that he's improved his FH by so much over such a short period of time), it's very powerful and consistent now. His rallying skills are now really really good. The opening of the game with the BH over-the-table loop followed by powerful continuous FH looping looks very Jike-like. I think his FH high-toss serve is really good, coupled with that BH serve he should be fine. He really shouldn't use that FH tomahawk, it always seems to put him in a bad position and it's way too slow and predictable (in terms of placement and spin) compared to the other 2 serves. It's also good he's working on his FH push and FH flips (won quite a few with them), but he does need quite a bit more control in the short game to win against the top players. His long pushes are not deep and fast enough, short pushes seem to go out too often which resulted in him losing the initiative. It's not easy but I think Ovtcharov is pretty smart and should be able to handle that. Now I think he also needs to make his game more complete, by improving his BH block and FH close-to-table counterloop. There were way too many points he lost because he couldn't control the spin from his opponent's loop, points which he should have earned because those loops weren't that dangerous to begin with (esp against Chuang).

IMO he was playing too passive in the 3rd game which dima snatched by playing aggressive and changed the momentum of the entire match.

It seemed like they were being too polite to each other. And then Dima sort of snuck by Timo.
At first I liked how they weren't cho'ing each other to pieces, but towards the end of the match I was wishing they would get more excited/intense. Timo's body language looked terrible. Like he was still depressed about the olympics or something. Edited by LOOPMEISTER - 11/04/2012 at 10:32pm |
