Thank you for the video. First to concede that table tennis terminology is in a very sorry state, and therefore in no spirit is this said to be critical, however the serve in the video is typically called (I think), a reverse tomahawk sidespin serve. The unqualified tomahawk serve term is a forehand serve, using the forehand side of the racket. The reverse tomahawk uses the backhand side of the racket, as in the video. The justification for this distinction is grounded on the understanding that the reverse tomahawk produces the opposite (reversed) sidespin when compared with the forehand-side-based tomahawk serve. Thanks,

Hi,
One of the biggest challenges in attempting to understand sidespin serves is found in how the sidespin serves are described. In pragmatic effect, a pure sidespin serve is virtually non-existent. Accompanying the sidespin effect is either a topspin or underspin effect. In PATT, we refer to this phenomenon as the spin-spin ratio, representing that the effect on the racket from this one rotation on the ball has two effects on the racket, either sidespin and topspin or sidespin and underspin. Few exposures in table tennis are more perplexing than the required efforts by the serve receiver's attempts to understand the spin-spin ratio. The term "spin-spin ratio" was selected to highlight the responsibility to sufficiently understand the spin influence on the ball as a relationship between the two effects. As examples, a serve may be 90% topspin and 10% sidespin; 30% underspin and 70% sidespin, and on and on. This judgment responsibility as described above is critical to properly responding to the oncoming ball. The standard of evaluation for the resultant judgment is that it must be "sufficient," that is, the understanding derived from the judgment phase here must be adequate for the intentions of the receiver. The consequences reflecting the precision of judgment for the serve receiver are profound. It is very often the case that an inadequate understanding of the spin-spin ratio is the cause of the serve receiving difficultly in these circumstances. As the table tennis demons are never satisfied, one last judgment consideration is the amount of spin on the serve, as allocated between the two effects. Below the professional class of players, it is not infrequently found that a serving approach is adopted that employs quite light spins within the spin-spin ratio, subtlety disguising the attendant light topspin or light underspin that is often difficult to detect, in which cases result in missed or poor quality serve returns. All of the fine serve videos in this series thread are spin-spin ratio serves. Thanks,

Thanks for the video. That serve is a topspin-sidespin serve.

Huh? That serve is very much illegal. It doesn't have the minimum required 16 cm rise.

OK the 16cm are hardly there so you are right and I'm wrong. I'd say the toss is so high, the 16cm rule is totally useless here but again you are right since the rules are the rules. The toss is also not perfectly vertical which also makes the serve illegal; it does not provide any advantage to the server but the rules are the rules.
I was more focusing on the free arm getting out of the way; also no head, no shoulder are trying to hide the ball in its descent. The receiver can see the ball all the time and especially at contact time. I should have said "fair" or "legal in spirit" instead of "legal". |
