bluebucket's comments in another thread had me wondering what the consensus amongst ej's would be..

is it more critical to find the right FH rubber for your game, or BH rubber?

In the end a backhand rubber is more important than the forehand rubber. Almost everyone can choose between 3 common rubbers like T05, Hexer or TG3 on the forehand and play to any level they are ever going to reach. Because the demands on a backhand rubber are so much greate it's not such an easy choice to make on the other side -bluebucket

My call is that they are equaully important. Then again, I'm a junk rubber user, which might explain why I feel like this.

I would say,m that for most people, analyze your game, which side do you use the most? Which side costs you points and which side earns you points? Chances are pretty good that most inverted players will pick their fh side as more important.

My point might have been misunderstood, I meant the choice of rubber was more important and that the demands on the BH rubber are greater. Not which side was more important to your game. If you are a forehand orientated player like most people are then of course the forehand rubber is the most important one for winning points.

Even in that case you will still improve your level more getting the backhand rubber just right more than you ever will getting the just right forehand rubber perfect since so many rubbers can play the more simplistic forehand side well, very few rubbers can do everything you need to do on the backhand side

perhaps a better way to pose the question would have been, "Is it easier to find the proper FH or BH rubber that best suits your game"

If you were to take a list of all the rubbers ITTF approved and marked them ideal FH or BH I expect you might have 80% maybe 90% of the inverted rubbers on the forehand side

I personally find that my backhand makes better shots than my forehand. I choose my backhand rubber more on theory than feel or performance. My FH was another story alltogether. I did a fair bit of ej'ing with blades and rubbers to get a good FH loop from any type of ball. Even within the same family I found different sponge hardness/thickness important to be able to get my shot off as often as possible.

I think backhand because I personally return more serves, push and flick more with my backhand, as well as spinning the ball, but I feel like any tacky rubber will be good for the forehand.

I'm going to vote for backhand with similar thinking. I really want a rubber than grabs the ball for backhand flips. I don't seem to be as picky with my forehand choice. (it's very close though)

The problem for EJ's and this poll is that EJs also like to change and experiment with their style. At the moment I'm into my Zhang Jike mode. So I tend to receive serves with my BH and hit with it, thus making my BH side more important...for now.Smile
