Most of the clubs I play have wooden floors. All these floors are so
slippery because it has so much dust and particles - the club don't
clean the floors. I used to play with regular running shoes before.
Couple of months back I bought Table Tennis shoes (Butterfly and
Killerspin shoes having rubber soul). These table tennis shoes had good
grip with the floor initially, now it is so slippery. I tried to
wet the sole with water before playing each point, but that is not
helping me at all. This is really preventing me to move fast against
fast shorts - I feel more confident on cement floors. Couple of my
other friends have also the same problem on wooden floors. One of the
friends has NIKE basketball shoe - he has the same problem too.
Any suggestions to improve the traction with the floor, or suggestion for a better shoe? |

there will always be slippery floor, you will have to live with it... instead of running all over the place, try sliding or just stand firm and play blocking instead.

I had same problem before I was recommended Adidas Clima Cool by Ping-Pong.com and it was the right choice. Slippery floors were not slippery anymore. The shoes have lasted for more than a year with about once a week club play. I have tried different Stiga shoes but they all slipped.
You do have Donic Walner Flex which claims to be grippy and non slippery, I am buying it next week would come to know soon.

Thanks guys for the tips.
I use my shoes heavily, and play 5 days per week. I may have to try the rubber cleaner. This is the same problem many dancers also face. What they have been asked to do is change the shoe. According to them, no rubber solution (may be rubber cleaner) should be used on the sole because it can further destroy the floor in the long run.
I don't agree with adambty's suggestion that we need to change our game based on the floor. The players who stand close to the table and block may adopt that suggestion, but players who are agressive can't adopt that.
Anyone has tried different shoes like Nike, Puma which are good on wooden floors. BYW, I will try out this adidas that has been suggested.

Another thing I found is when I washed my shoes they were very good for some time though the same Stiga shoes slipped before. In other words, if you don't want to use rubber cleaner but wash the sole with water and soap before the match, it should hold well for some time. I know in India they used to have powder with glass mix in it called Broza, I have not seen it here in North America. It would be used in the same fashion as water i.e. dip you shoe tip on top of it and it would increase the grip.
But, as varghesep recommended it could harm the floor. Water is used by most players when they find it slippery. Dip the tip of front sole and it tap it to dry and that works.
You could actually mop the floor before you play but I know most of us would not do that.

I definitely would do that. Not a mop, but a rag, wet it (wring it enough so it's not too wet, just moist) and wipe the area. It takes 60-120 seconds to do but it's worth it. I suck on slippery floors because I'm an aggressive looper who steps around the backhand a lot and really need the traction. I get so frustrated when my shoes don't grip. But yeah also use the moist cloth on your shoes as well. |

You are right. Too much water can cause more slip. But I like this suggestion that wash the shoe sole before play.
Has anyone tried shoes like New Balance Off Road or any other shoe with sole which is not smooth as Table Tennis shoes? I have a blog on one such shoe - but I don't know it is good for Table Tennis. The link is http://www.varghesepallathu.com/vp/blog/index.php?entry=entry060221-120356

As long as I keep them clean, my adidas tt shoes typically have very good traction even on slick floors, but some are just super dusty. I play a wild distance looping, lobbing, chopping game, and I despise any place that either has slippery floors or inadequate room around the table. I have had too many near misses between slipping and crashing into walls, chairs, etc.

There was a guy at our club yesterday. He may weigh 250 lbs. He falls every games on the floor. I told the club president to do something before some severe problem comes up.

Good move. The problem in table tennis is that there is no defined court. Unlike tennis, where you are running all over the actual dimension-defined playing surface, in tt as long as the table fits in a space, people often think that everything is good. Even when there is room and a nice well kept floor, new players often blatantly walk behind you as you are playing a point, causing safety hazards. I have had way too many close calls at clubs around here, and I am starting to just be vocal about it.

Hey Folks its just that simple clean the floor once intensely with a wet mob(that is my suggestion). Then just do like a schedule for the club who cleans the floor after a training day maybe the ones who are the last ones who are in the club, thats the way it is handled in our club and our floor is very grippy, at least very grippy for everyone no complains from anyone!

i say most floors are not like that why they are then in a sports hall i think most of the clubs do their training in some kind of sports hall and why do they take a slippery floor into a sportshall what should they archieve with that in every sport(in the hall of the club) you need a grippy floor or am i wrong?

Thats really now just temporarily and after a while a little annoying. The better way is to get a cloth make it wet, wring it out and lay it near the table so you can step on it everytime you feel slippery.

Moisten the bottom of your sneakers. A lot of people wet a paper towl and lay it next to the table. Then step on it a few times. |
