Clearly age - at 37, it's hard to play two matches in peak condition in one day.  That's why he was so on and off.  He tended to play the first match relatively well, but against the very best players in the tournament, two in one day or even three was tough.  It's been going on for at least 2 years now.

Mental strength is the joker issue here.
At that level everyplayer is mental strong enough.
DO is progressing well but he still is not so good in his dynamics as the top cnt players.
On the other side he is a tricky player with predetermined service game.
His bh is very good compensating some lack of footwork power.
EJ Club.

He should take lessons from Persson, who is quite a bit older and yet stays in great physical shape.

I think the issues are relative, not absolute.

They are absolutely relative to the variable balance between perception and reality, indeed; just like the fh looping technique involved in the scholar emoticon's page turning skills above, with follow through and all!

Awesome videos.  Is this the same guy that did those terrific Russia Champions League videos?

No, that was user LehaFes (see his YouTube channel). Alex Lomaev is a PR/media officer of FNTR (Russian Table Tennis Federation)... hope I got his title right. He is also an avid photo/video journalist and goes (when he can) to all major European tournaments where Russian players are involved.

You can actually see him in many videos from ETTC 2013 videotaping or taking pictures...
