I know some of you guys like to play hardbat once in awhile. so what do you use and why? I love taking a break from fast setups and expensive blades and rubbers.
LKT Toxic 3> BTY Orthodox OX> Great Hardbat combo. Hock 3-Ply Small Head> Yasaka A1-2

I had my Hock 3-ply shaved to the size of the TBS with Dr Evil. Less flex and great control !!
Playing HB tunes up my strokes, love the sound !!

old Stiga premade + Gambler Peacekeeper
My inverted play improves after playing hardbat or if I play Johnny Huang style with a Galaxy W6 + SP both sides |

I just use my old shakehand blades. I put Dr Evil on Juic Maple Shot or Joola Rossi Fire.
After playing hardbat, the inverted rubbers feel so much softer. Since the hardbat style is more defensive for me, I feel I see the ball much better or hand eye coordination much better when I switch back to my normal setup. I use shakehand for hardbat and CPen for inverted. Since the strokes are different, there is no adjustment switching from hardbat to CPen inverted looping. |

I have 3 right now.
1 Toxic 5 with Peacekeeper. This is the one I play with the most and the one in the high speed videos. It is very flexible. 2 LKT Instinct with Dr Evil. The LKT Instinct is noticeably stiffer but generates about the same amount of spin. 3. Toni Hold White Spot with Yasaka A-1-2. The THWS is relatively stiff compared to the Toxic 5 but slow like the Toxic 5. The A-1-2 seems to have just a little more grip than the Peacekeeper and Dr Evil. Peacekeeper seems to generate a little spin reversal that A-1-2 can't especially if I block the ball closer to the handle where there isn't as much flex. Notice that most of us are using slow blades. |

My standard for a long time was the LKT Instinct with Dr. Evil but I wanted something a bit larger since I was chopping more.
So I went to using a Butterfly Cutlass for its larger size and slowness and Gambler Peacekeeper because black Dr. Evil got messed up at about the same time. But I could not find another Cutlass blade that matched the speed of my first Cutlass that I like (all were too fast) and they fixed the black Dr. Evil issue. So, I'm currently using a Nittaku Resist with Dr. Evil on both sides. Fairly stiff, but still slow and "soft" due to the use of willow. |

I can actually loop away from table with my LKT Toxic 3/ BTY Orthodox OX. More difficult with the Hock/Yasaka A1-2. LKT Toxic seems flexier even though the speed between the two blades is about the same. I tried Dr. Evil and did not like it at all...a bit strange to my taste. I will order a Nittaku Kim Kyung Ah blade with BTY Orthodox. It is getting great reviews so we will see if it makes a good hardbat.

Ralph Stadelman didn't like Dr Evil either after I beat him with it at the Nationals.

I have a question about hardbat gluing:
could that be declared illegal in a hb tourney? I would not describe the smudges as bubbles; at some point they kind of were and I hoped they'd go away; the bubbles are gone but there is still a noticeable difference on all the spots. |

I think it is unlikely that anyone would give you grief. BTW, I always trim that bottom 3/16" or so off of the bottom of my Dr. Evil before gluing to reduce the area taken up by the pip-less label.

Yasaka A1-2 is the easiest to glue without the bubble effect. BTY Orthodox OX and Dr. Evil takes some careful steps. Also adding a heavy book after gluing for 24 hours helps a lot.

Valor has some very nice products. They are not widely known that I know of. "American Chopper" looks like a great hardbat. Also there is a super nice offering from OSP in the DEF+ class.

Hock 3 ply with Dr on both sides, I hit and chop on both sides.
I used to play with a $2 Wal-Mart hard bat type up to 1700 vs inverted.

You might want to try the LKT Toxic 5. Faster and a bit stiffer. Price is very nice.

At the club where I play now they call it hardbat to play with bare blades. No 0X SP, no nothing, only wood.
It's actually quite good fun.

Bare wood blade. How "historical". I actually own a GENUINE "Ping Pong" paddle... "Ping Pong" being a Registered Trademark of Parker Bros. for their table tennis gaming equipment.
It is from about 1928 and is solid rock maple plywood. And yes... a blast to play with! |
